I think it's also regional. We've been saying crunchy here in the Northeast for a good 25 years. As far as I can recall, it comes from crunchy granola, back when granola was kind of only eaten by people who were on the health food bent (which was usually people who were kind of next generation hippies) and then shortened to just crunchy.
And I think the crunchy meter is regional too. Around these parts you would just be normal and not crunchy. You would get bonus points for the cloth diapering but the rest of it is all pretty standard.
