The Eventful World of Fish

It seems that the company in Mt. Sterling that M interviewed with has decided to "move in another direction" so I guess he's back to the drawing board on that one. I wasn't ready for him to go back to work anyway, not that my wants on the subject are of any account.

Carrie, please avert your eyes for the next paragraph:

Our fishies lost their bowl privileges today. We have two monster goldfish, Larry and Blackie. Blackie lived his first two non-retail-store years in a small bowl, dedicating his existence to my niece's occasional amusement and my mother's constant irritation. My parents are not pet people. He was donated to us when we bought a real fish tank, and now his original Mama just comes to visit with him ever so often. Anyway, we put a round goldfish bowl into the tank, and Blackie is perversely attached to it. He fits in it perfectly, but Larry is considerably larger. Poor dear hasn't realized that he is a plus size fish and therefore has not grasped the idea that he needs to stay out of objects smaller than he is. Occasionally, he'll get stuck in the bowl, but he's always gotten out quickly enough. Today, though, he was completely stuck and unable to get out after several minutes. He's lucky we happened to be in the living room, or he'd probably still be stuck. He trapped Blackie in the bowl for a while as well, but he eventually managed to escape. Larry was bent almost double, though, and still too stupid to point his head in the right direction. M had to initiate a rescue attempt, so our fish are now officially without their bowl on a permanent basis due to their inability to behave with it.

See why it's a good thing we don't have dogs or, heaven forbid, cats? I can write 235 words on our fish--imagine what I could do for Fluffy.

We also played mailman this afternoon. One of Whitley's cards was returned--I didn't use the proper zip code because the book clearly said something else, but anyway--so we drove over to stick it in the mailbox ourselves. She had received three of them by Friday, plus a few cards from other people, so she was pretty happy. The last two went out today. Her party is Friday.. I can't believe she'll be nine this week. I realized today that if I got pregnant right now, by the time my baby was her age, she would be out of high school. My, how time flies.

I know I said that I would write about the new project on Sunday night, but I'm still putting final touches on it. I really do hope for tomorrow, though. How boring life would be without procrastination and perfectionism--my two favorite P words. When I was in seventh grade, I casually mentioned to my best friend that K was my favorite letter. She gave me one of her famous "are you completely crazy?!" looks, unwilling to believe that I actually had a favorite letter. I had never thought about the possibility that other people wouldn't have a favorite. People ask about favorite numbers all the time, and I like letters much better than numbers. I don't know if my favorite letter is K just because of my name or not, but I think I like it for its own unique qualities. It's prickly and opinionated and just plain fun, and besides that, it's the eleventh letter of the alphabet, so how could you go wrong in that?

Now I'm curious. Do you have a favorite letter? If so, what is it and why is it your favorite?

What a hilarious fish story. They sound almost like dumb dogs :D

My favorite letter has always been Z. I always thought it was a fun, zippy, zigzaggy way to end the alphabet. I also like D because of the Sesame Street song, as sung by Ernie.

They're dumber than dogs.

Z is a good letter, and that's a very great reason for liking it. I'm not so crazy about D, though..

That's because you don't know the song!

Dee, dee-dee, dee-dee, dee-dee, dee-dee, dee-dee, doggy;
Dee-dee, dangerous dragon;
Dee-dee, dee-dee, donkey, duckie,
Dinosaur.

Oh, dee, dee-dee, dee-dee, dee-dee, dee-dee, dee-dee, dinner;
Dee-dee, dee-dee, de-licious;
Dee-dee, dee-dee, dee, don't drop dishes
Down on the floor.

Oh, do a dance.
Dig some dirt.
Dunk a doughnut for dessert.
Draw a daisy that's dee-de-lightful to see.
When "D" is handy, it's fine and dandy.

Dee, dee-dee, dee,
"D" is such a very nice letter.
Each day I like it better,
That lovely letter called "D!"

(dialogue)

Draw a daisy that's dee, de-lightful to see.
When "D" is handy, it's fine and dandy.

Dee, dee-dee, dee,
"D" is such a very nice letter.
Each day I like it better,
That lovely letter called "D,"
Dee-dee, dee, having fun,
But now I'm dee, dee, dee, done!

I like S because it is all curvy and I used to have a lisp. I got to play all sorts of fun games with the speech therapist*. ssssssssssammy the ssssssnake was a big part of the games.

*I had to start going to "speech" after my best friend, Jenny, who had a "R" problem, told the teacher my "S" was weird. I think she just wanted company. So ssssssammy and rrrrrrrralph rrrrrrrrrabbit (thammy the thnake and walph wabbit case back then)had a lot of fun together.

*giggle* That was really funny and cute. I had a slight R problem when I was very small (before school) and I couldn't, among other things, say the name of my brother's bus driver, Roy. The Rs cleared up on their own, but I still can't say Roy. I guess Jenny would have taken me to speech with her, too.

I have no favourite letter!! Oh no!! Now I feel like something's been missing from my life!!!!

[identity profile] same-sky.livejournal.com 2004-03-16 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, dear, K1, what will you ever do?! It's never too late to pick a favorite letter! Think about it and get back with me. ;)

[identity profile] courtesy.livejournal.com 2004-03-16 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Get back with you??!! It was bad enough the first time!!! Plus you pick the most tactless times to be suggestive.... ;)

[identity profile] same-sky.livejournal.com 2004-03-16 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
You know me; tact isn't my thing. *depressed sigh* I guess that means no, eh? :)

[identity profile] courtesy.livejournal.com 2004-03-17 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn right!! (Only because I can't do the long distance thang....)

*heart-broken sobbing*

it's an E. lots of right angles, and it looks good folded top to bottom. Also the lowercase one is cute. Plus it corresponds to the number 5 which has been present in about 10 of my 12 addresses in my life.

[identity profile] same-sky.livejournal.com 2004-03-16 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree with your E analysis. There's something balancing about a letter than can be folded in half. *nod* Good answer! :)

I like C and K and Y. For a while I used to have an irrational hate of K since most people spell Carrie with a K. Bad, bad people. But now I love the letter, unless it's imposing itself on my name.

[identity profile] same-sky.livejournal.com 2004-03-16 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
Those are all good letters, and that's a reasonable separation--love the letter, hate the attempt to take over your name. I have an irrational hatred of E when it imposes itself on my name but otherwise it's good. I used to be able to say "There are no Es in my name! Anywhere! Cut it out!" but now I have two in my last name so it's not quite as good since people are often dumb.
