if you get a bike, consider a recumbent bike or get one with a REALLY comfortable seat. Mine hurts my butt so much it's torture to ride the damn things. But the recumbent ones at the gym or nice.
If you can get a good elliptical trainer, I say go for it - the ones at the gym give me a WAY better workout than the bike, but it's still not torture, especially if it's in front of the tv.
They do make treadmills that fold up so they can be stored underneath something or up against a wall.
