Wednesday night
Jun. 5th, 2002 10:22 pmTonight has been nice. We went on a date. Well, sorta. We at least went to Pasquale's! It was excellent, as usual. And we briefly mentioned going to a movie (Star Wars.. we still haven't seen it. This doesn't disturb me in the slightest but my baby wants to see it.) so that made it a date. Yay! And we've been having extra quality time tonight. :) Alas, now he's watching Junkyard Wars and occasionally playing a loud stringed instrument, so I have to amuse myself now.
I have some adorable pictures of M as a baby that I borrowed from his parents. I need to make a copy of one and fix a picture frame, but I wasn't sure which would be best, since I didn't have the frame. That needs to be done. I also have homepage pictures to add and add captions for and stuff. And I'm supposed to fix a new resume. And I'm supposed to work on a site for M's dad. And I'm supposed to redo the company site and get it ready to go. And I'm supposed to change hosts. Speaking of which, I found out last night that .com is available, so I think we'll be moving from the .net domain, and when we do that, we'll be getting rid of the old, sucky hosting company. And, of course, they won't give us any money back, but at least we'll be through with them. This means nothing to you, of course. Oh well. :)
I still haven't heard from Chick since I've been back. I sent her an email.. weird.
Also since we've been back, my Swedish has been majorly neglected. We were working on it quite a lot while we were there, which I guess isn't too strange, and it was really neat because my skills improved quite a lot during the time we were there. Still not ready to speak to people other than Magnus, though. My pronounciation is horrible. I know this because my loving husband laughs at me all the time. But I do pick up stuff in conversations much easier now. I can often tell what's being discussed, and occasionally even throw in comments in English that are actually related to the subject. I'm afraid that this works mainly because Magnus is there, and I happen to know what he's likely to be talking about. I'm not sure how much that has to do with it, if anything.
But hey. Swedes get a minimum of six years of English in school, and up to nine or ten years, and Magnus claims that 90%+ go to the last few years of school, so let's add that in. I, on the other hand, have gotten sporadic Swedish lessons for the last three years from someone who doesn't know any grammar rules. And then there's all the English language exposure (tv shows, books, movies, clothing, etc.) in Sweden. I don't get much Swedish language exposure here in Kentucky. So. My calculations show that due to the obstacles in my way, I should be able to speak fairly fluent Swedish by... 2011!
Seriously, though, I've decided (once again.. this happens a lot) that I want to be more determined about it now. I'm sort of at the point where I need to work with it a little more instead of passively absorbing. Vocabulary is what I was best at for a long time, and now that's what needs work. We've already decided that, for a variety of reasons, our kids will be bilingual. As we're approaching our child-bearing years (not for a while, of course), I'm having horrifying visions of little brats running around saying things that I don't understand just to annoy me. It's a pretty good incentive, actually.
We bought some of those salt licorice candy things so I (and possibly others) could try it. I still haven't, but Magnus, who kept saying that he wasn't particularly fond of it, has taken to eating them like crazy. I wish he wouldn't. It stinks horribly! :)
Anyway, need to find something else to do for a while before bedtime. I am, of course, somewhat sleepy already. Partly because I'm always sleepy, but probably mainly because I'm still getting up at 7 a.m... ergh.
