Friday afternoon
Jul. 5th, 2002 09:09 pmToday is somewhat on the sucky side. Since I haven't written since Tuesday, though, perhaps I should go at this in chronological order.
On Wednesday morning Mom called and wanted to know if I wanted to ride to Lexington with them, as they were going to Sam's to pick up some stuff for the concession stand that they were doing at the fireworks display on Thursday. I thought about it a while and finally decided that I might as well, and then Magnus could meet us for lunch, and I could have the car to go about in Lexington with afterwards and then ride home with Magnus. So, that's what I did and why I wasn't home all day. Had a nice time, though. I walked around Barnes and Noble for ages, just looking at books and things. Didn't buy a single thing, of course. I feel sorta bad about it, but I hate paying too much for something when I know I can get it for cheaper online. On the other hand, we do buy stuff there. Just not my current purchase--Alton Brown's first book, which I believe I've mentioned before. I ordered it Wednesday night, and it should probably be here.. well. It'll be Monday at the earliest, I suspect, with the holiday and all. Argh. I checked the status, and it turns out that I ordered the second book (two items, free shipping = free book!) as a book on tape and not a real book! Argh! Cancelled it, will have to reorder it later. I swear, it would have been easier to pay the extra $9 and have it already!
Anyway. Yesterday was the 4th, and therefore M didn't have to work. I helped the parents cut up veggies while he went around town looking for lemons, and we made it out to the booth at the shopping center at around 1:30 or 2. Lots of work setting up in the immense heat, and very little sales until it got much later. The heat was really horrible, beyond description. But we had some fun, especially after it cooled down. We got really busy before the fireworks started, and a little after they ended, but trickled down to nearly nothing during them. I didn't get to see all that much, but I caught the halftime and grand finale, so that's pretty much okay.
Now, on to the bad side. We came home and got our showers and all that. Magnus went to lay down and got back up because he had something in his eye that really really hurt. He worked with it for a long time, and it didn't go away and eventually he came to bed, only to toss and turn all night long and be awake and even up most of the night. Meanwhile, I woke up at 3 am because my arms were throbbing. I assumed that I'd been laying on them, so I rolled over on my back and waited for the pain to stop. Twenty minutes later, it was just as bad, and really freaking me out. It's hard to explain what it felt like.. but not like muscle aches. This was throbbing and aching like a toothache, more or less. If I raised them up vertically, they didn't hurt as bad, and heat made it feel much worse. It was centered in my wrists, but radiated up to my shoulders at its worst points--if it had started in my shoulders, I may have went to the ER fearing it was a heart attack or something. I finally woke up Magnus (who wasn't very heavily asleep anyway) and we both got up to complain about pains for a while. Walked around and did various things (drink, bathroom, whine, tylenol) and felt quite a lot better.. enough to go back to bed and actually fall asleep again, at least. M was asleep for a while but got up again a little later for quite a while before coming back to bed and tossing and turning some more. I was awake on and off, having the kind of dream that you have when you're in pain.. weird things happening to cause the discomfort.. you know. So.. to sum it up--neither of us slept, and we've spent the day in varying degrees of pain.
We did get some errands done, though, and Magnus called in sick.. we were thinking he'd have to go to the doctor and have his eye looked at, but it turned out to be unnecessary, eventually. (Eye washes and naps helped with this.) The kitchen was a disaster, with birthday (cake!) dishes and sticky lemonade stuff, so he did dishes and I cleaned up the junk and helped him and stuff. Then I sent him to take a nap (laying down makes my arm hurt more, so I didn't go right away.) I did end up taking a short nap and regretting it, of course. Went to Pasquale's for dinner, and that was particularly nummy. :) My arms have hurt, but not nearly as much as last night, and more off and on than constant. I don't understand it, though. I'm sure it's about yesterday, and working with the deep-fryer, throwing baskets around and tossing the food out and all that, but I've worked at it much longer and much harder before without it happening. And we still don't know what was in Magnus's eye. Anyway, we've just felt particularly tired, achy, and miserable today. But we were tired, achy and miserable and TOGETHER, at least, which is something that we don't underestimate as a wonderful thing. :)
