Wednesday evening
Feb. 19th, 2003 10:53 pmThe other night when the power was out, we sat in the livingroom and "did questions". You know, hypothetical questions like "If you had to choose between being smart and ugly or pretty but dumb, which would you choose?" and similar. Conversation starters like these are somewhat special to us, because in a way, it's because of them that we're together. We were really just a tad bit more than friends but it wasn't going anywhere in a real life sense when I sent him one of those questionnaires, and he sent it back, and then suddenly, we started getting fairly serious and now we're married, all because I initiated all those important questions in life such as "Croutons or bacon bits?" and "Do you make fun of people?"
Anyway, that's not the point of this story. Oh, no, the point of this story is even more irrelevant. The question we got stuck on (we have a little red book with questions now) was something like this. "If you suddenly had three daughters, what would you name them?" We've discussed this matter before and never got anywhere with it. And, as we're not in the market for kidlets yet, we always just pushed the matter aside to deal with when the time comes. It's a reasonable outlook, really. But, since we were bored and most of the questions were either incredibly stupid or we already knew the answers to, we decided to really come up with some possibilities. We argued over names for half an hour, and at the end of that time, we had only agreed on one name as being a contender. (Note that we weren't trying to set these names in stone, we were just trying to come up with three that we could possibly consider, or even pretend to consider.) I won't say which name it is because.. well, we're probably going to be contrary about names when the time comes and no one will know til it's born. Unless we change our mind about that, too.
I'm just not sure what happened to us. I have a pretty unusual name, and he has a very common (in Sweden) one. Typically, people with unusual names have kids with common names and vice versa. This is so not the case with us. I like semi-gender-neutral and/or uncommon and/or modern names. Morgan, Madison, Regan, Chastyn (couldn't name a kid this anyway, it's my niece's sister's name, but I still like it), Casey and Corey. He gets freaked out at any name that he perceives as belonging to both girls and boys (which sucks because my original girl's name was Sydney Chance. He won't even discuss Sydney and just laughed at the Chance bit.. well, that was negotiable anyway.) He likes ultra-feminine traditional names. Then you add in the bilingual aspect of the name (I do NOT want my kid to endure a lifetime of mispronounciation from M's family, or mine, depending on the origin of the name.. yes, that's personal bitterness speaking. And not about the Swedes in my life not saying my name right, but a few of my relatives and a couple of high school teachers, that sort of thing.) And then there's also the weirdness of our last name with the G and J both being Y sounds. (Yay-er, if you were ever wondering.. man, do restaraunt greeters have a bitch of a time with that one.)
Of course, we do still have plenty of time to decide on names, so I know that I don't have to get stressed over it until I'm actually pregnant. Or even considering getting that way. I'm just not sure nine years would be long enough for us to agree on this, much less nine months. :)
