DSL, Demons, Dayjobs
Feb. 17th, 2005 10:33 pmI had a perfectly good rant percolating, but as it turns out, I have nothing to rant about. I mentioned last night that we got our DSL stuff and set it all up, only to find that we were getting half the speed of what we were getting with our cable modem, and that speed (occasionally 60kps, usually not) is certainly nothing to write home about. Depressing, actually, although accepted because it was cheap-ish. (Not actually as cheap as we originally thought it was, but still.) The point here is just that it was hardly worth the effort, time, expense, etc of changing services if we were going to run into problems--and today, there was basically no connection at ALL, much less last night's 25kps. We had a technician scheduled for Saturday and everything! But between my husband's hot body and my brainsuperior intellect and my ability to click the "run test" button on the bandwidth test site repeatedly, we managed to figure out that the problem was with our cordless phone being plugged into the jack the DSL filter thingie goes in. Huh. M was dancing around, anxious to get rid of my phone because he was sure that one was the problem (I've had this phone at least since we lived in Augusta (GA).. so basically, fourth grade. It's ugly--you know the clear kind where you can see all the equipment inside in various bright colors?--and it has some dialtone issues sometimes but it's MY PHONE and even though M hates it it's STILL MY PHONE so there.) but it turned out to be his swoopy black cordless that we bought less than a year ago. So, now we have rearranged our phones and we're getting much more respectable speeds.. three times what we were getting three days ago. Now let's just hope that it's still working tomorrow, since we cancelled the technician.
The demons have left my body today, knock on wood. I'm still sniffly and tired and sick, but as much as earlier in the week by a long shot. I just went into a twenty-minute harangue to M about the progression of my cold symptoms, and my sensitivity to cold medicine, which led into a repeating of three different conversations we had at work today, and really, all that was just to explain why I sighed loudly (just been breathing funny during the cold.) I'll spare you all that, and just say that I have to take back a little of my DayQuil enthusiasm. It was still a miraculous help yesterday, but it left me with a hangover.of the drunk type. Queasy stomach, dizzy, loopy, edgy and fuzzy around the edges. I still have a bit of queasy, but most of the rest of it faded around lunch. I even felt well enough to clean up a little, and I got to knit for a while, which I haven't done since a half-hearted attempt on Monday convinced me to give it a rest until I was well. Finished something, too, but I don't want to post about it yet for.. reasons I don't want to post about yet. How's that for vague?
One more day this week. It feels like we've already put in fifty.. will be glad to see the happy side of Saturday. Oh, and by the way, today marks nine months at my current job, a fact which is interesting to no one but me. Actually, it's not even all that interesting to me because, although my probationary period was nine months, they didn't start counting until June 1, so I still have to wait until March for my5% raise unconditional acceptance probation to end anyway. Oh, well. February is a short month anyway. ;)
