Midsummer

We're off here in a little while to Lexington to the midsummer picnic held by the Scandinavian Heritage club. This will be the third time we've gone.. it's been quite fun before but it's really, really hot today so let's hope that it's not ruined by the heat. My brave friend J is apparently bringing an ice cream cake. I say brave, because I was planning on bringing a cake with fresh strawberries and jam and whipped cream but was afrad it would melt. She's bringing a frozen dessert! I settled for cole slaw, in the end, because I am the daughter of someone who is well-known for her cole slaw skills. It's in the genes, you know. Which also means I should be downstairs shredding cabbage, actually, but well, that sucks.

I made some of it last night, but decided that it wasn't enough to take.. I bought the cabbage earlier in the day but I had intended it for something else. So, I added it in to our dinner. Being the good wife I am, I threw a little surprise midsummer party for the boy. We had pickled herring and new potatoes with dill, and the slaw, of course. Because it might not be part of the typical Swedish meal or anything, but it did go with it very well. And freshly-squeezed lemonade.. again, perhaps not the typical midsummer beverage, but then, I'm not an alcoholic. Err. Snark not intended. I think it went over pretty well. I even put things out in matching bowls on the table. I've been married for almost five years now and I kid you not, this is the first time I can remember that I actually put food on the table rather than just serving it from the stove. I'm just not the fancy sort, alright?

Anyway, after the picnic, we're heading to Morehead to stay with my parents. They have not yet been informed of this yet. It just makes sense, since otherwise, we'll come back here and sleep, and then drive back through Lexington tomorrow on the way there. Speaking of which, we kind of need to pack our stuff.

And did I mention that we need to leave in a couple of hours? I haven't the faintest idea why I'm sitting here instead of getting all this stuff done. I guess I should get busy here. And my husband-boy is going to take me to the Stitch Niche! Even though it's in the middle of town and we'll have to deal with all sorts of traffic! He's nice. I'm glad I married him.
