same_sky: (stop and smell the flowers)
A long, long time ago, I went on a journey to a neighboring land, my steadfast companion at my side. Okay, so I went shopping in Ashland with [livejournal.com profile] stewlis, same difference. One of our long-standing jokes was born on that day as we watched a young guy jump out of his car, dash down by the side of the road and grab a handful of cat tails, which he returned with and presented to his ladylove, waiting patiently in the car. And our reaction was to say, gee, I wish someone would bring ME weeds! We were a little bitter at the time, what can I say?

M took the trash out this afternoon and returned with Saturday's mail. Back in June or so, we bought a bunch of clothes at JCPenny's and got a free digital camera, which finally arrived today. It's kind of dinky and isn't nearly as good as our current one, but we figure that it will be perfectly fine for taking on those occasions when we don't want to mess up our good camera. Or.. well, we really don't know what we'll do with it, but who would turn down a free digital camera, right? Yeah. So, later in the evening he took the trash out again because he had a large box to throw away (more on that in a minute) and I reminded him that he had brought me a present when he went out with the trash earlier in the day, and to please bring another present when he returned, for I like the presents. He returned a few minutes later with his hand behind his back, and presented me with a dead dandelion. "It's a weed!" he said happily. "You always said you wanted someone to bring you weeds!"

So, yeah. I totally asked for that one.

In other news, we have been so busy today that I am considering falling asleep here in my chair. Or, I would be if we had gotten out of bed before eleven this morning, at least. We cleaned the house from top to bottom and then I took the boy out on a shopping spree. Originally, he just needed some paint for his mandolin, but before we came home, I bought him a chair expensive enough that I had to coerce him into agreeing to and a bread machine. We're calling it citizenship presents.. hey, it's a one-time big deal, right? We're so funny. We're well-known for being frugal people, but we're extremely unfrugal when it comes to each other. As for the bread machine.. we've talked about buying one before but never got around to it. Bread and beer are probably two of the most lamented items for non-Americans living in the US, at least in my anecdotal experience. M in particular has a sandwich fetish that you would not believe, so we go through quite a lot of bread in this household. In the long run, we'll save money by making our own bread that's better than what we currently buy.. or at least, that's the hope. The first loaf of bread is in the making right now.. we'll see how it turns out.

I am reading these books at the moment that came highly recommended.. the Sevenwaters trilogy by Juliet Marillier. They have so far been good, but weird, but engaging, but also really odd. I'm 58 pages into book three at the moment, and the main character just did something so horrible, albeit unplanned, that I haven't the faintest idea how I can continue to relate to her. Does it get better, or am I just soft-hearted and overly sensitive? I am quite disturbed by the whole thing so far, but I figure that it gets sorted out in the end. It usually does.
