A few years back, my uncle got lung cancer. You know what's really really weird? He was diagnosed with lung cancer, he quit smoking and he was treated for it and now it's gone. You know what else is weird? My mom has diabetes, and guess what! She goes to the doctor, and she gets medicine for it. And do you know what? No one ever, ever asked my uncle if he thought that treating his cancer was ethical. No one ever condemns my mother for taking her sugar pills. No one ever tells them to just relax instead of seeing medical professionals, maybe take a vacation, and that they minute they start seeing an herbalist they'll be cured on their own. And also? No one ever asks them to file papers with government agencies about their medical health and history and their income and their values and their reasons for treatment. (???) and their response to previous medical issues. You know why? Because this is fucking America* and although the health care system here is flawed, it's not illegal, unethical or even ill-advised to pursue treatment for genuine medical conditions.

Or? Haven't you heard--the right to privacy and freedom and liberty and all that? That's SO 1999, dude.

Apparently, the state of Indiana is proposing to force couples--oh, excuse me, married couples, as single persons, gay persons and those reprehensible persons living in sin, God bless this great land, are to be completely forbidden by law in this pursuit--pursuing fertility treatments to file paperwork and submit to an assessment to judge their fitness as parents. This will include, but will not be limited to, stating their intentions and relationships and hobbies and talents and income and family of origin and fertility history and physical and medical health and education.

Because you know, the pursuit of happiness was a stupid thing to say.

I would add that apparently, this is not supposed to affect couples who are attempting to produce 100% biological children, but the people who need donor eggs or donor sperm or whatnot? You're just screwed. And the thing is--it doesn't matter. No one knows what the future will bring for them, and if they will require these treatments that are oh-so-easy to condemn by the let's-legislate-morality group. (Bastards.) Also, it seems pretty clear that the point is mainly to prevent children from being born to gay couples or single parents. However I look at it, it's just creepy and wrong. I don't personally have to be an infertile lesbian without a sperm to my name to feel this odd thing called "empathy". (Some individuals might want to look that one up.)

Also: I read about it from herveryown, if you are curious. She writes about it very, very well, I think. Also, if you would like to let them know exactly how you feel about the subject, you can do so here. Remember.. your state could be next.

*Not that you can't get suitable health care in other countries, or that I am trying to say that America is where all the good is. I am just mocking the institution, man.

Edited to add: it appears that the legislator in question has already dropped plans for this bill. (link from [livejournal.com profile] carrieb.) However.. I would remind you that the fact that this one crazy person has been thwarted doesn't make the "thought" that went into this bill any less scary.
