As I was drifting off to sleep last night, I raised my head and said, "Sears. You can buy a new TV at Sears." M probably thought I was on crack. But I immediately felt guilty for lying to you. The town in which I am from has a partial-Sears--they only sell appliances, tools and a few electronics--no clothes or jewelry or shoes or anything fun at all, really. And technically you can probably buy a blender, and certainly a mixing bowl, at the dollar store. But still, the point remains.

I was surprised at how many responses I got on the WalMart issue, and I thought about it a little more today while answering comments. I think one thing that it boils down to for me is that I feel that these people of whom I was ranting are condescending, at the root of it. Never mind that WalMart is about the only option some of us get. "You poor, dirty, ignorant folk who live in rural areas couldn't possibly know what's best for you so we will take care of the ethical objections in your name and condemn WalMart for bringing jobs and low-priced snack foods to your town, for clearly you have not the wits to think for yourself or otherwise you wouldn't be living in the sticks as you are, have a nice day." I didn't even realize that was one of the things that I was reacting to, but that's what it feels like they're saying. Of course I'm guilty of reading too much into things sometimes but I'm standing by this opinion.

Four. Day. Weekend. Oh, how lovely. My eyes are burning like fire so I think I'll have to go to bed now and reboot them. I am so looking forward to these nice consecutive days away from my job..
