Oct. 18th, 2007 11:59 pmWe bought a car. Or technically, we're buying a car. It's a 2001 Ford Taurus. My mom and I are supposed to go down to the courthouse tomorrow to do the deed swap title thing, and M will be calling the insurance company in the morning. Because I am a helpless female who cannot do things about cars. No, actually, he's calling because he gets up earlier than I do. Owning a Ford really makes me feel dirty, and a world in which MY DAD picks out a Ford for me to own is really one in which all things are turned upside down. Honestly, I really don't care much about what brand a car is but I have been indoctrinated into the Chevy side of the Chevy-Ford wars. Is that a southern thing, maybe, or does everyone have to pick their loyalties to one of those at birth?
My dad is so funny. The entire reason they went to the surplus vehicle sale is because he really wanted to buy a truck. A big truck that can haul stuff without breaking the transmission. He has a big truck but it's gotten unreliable in its old age with that sort of thing. (Please note that the old age of his truck is newer than either of our current vehicles.. not counting the new one.) Seriously, I am not even going to make fun of him because my dad really does haul stuff, like campers, or trailers, on a fairly regular basis. Anyway. There is a big deal regarding the amount of money they brought and the fact that he found this car for us first and purchased it, and so it was serendipity than this truck came through at the right price. It's a really nice looking truck.. very very roomy and big. He paid $2800 for it. Then they drove it home, and while driving through town, he met a guy he knew, and they waved at each other. An hour later, the guy (who is really more of an acquaintance than a friend) calls my dad and talks to him about his new truck, and the next thing you know, my dad has sold him the truck for $3300. He made $500 for going to an auction, and driving a truck home from Frankfort--and the guy knew how much Dad had paid for it, too. That's the thing about my dad. He can (and will!) sell crap that he's not even particularly interested in selling to begin with, if the price is right. It's not the first time he's bought something and had it sold before he even gets it home. My mom and I have had a long-standing joke that Dad would sell off anything he possibly could, including us. (We pretend it's a joke but we are kidding on the square, as Lewis Black would say.) Mom is cheerily distraught over it--you can't help but laugh but he really WANTED that truck!
Anyway, my mom is bringing my aunt (and cousin--the one that fell off a roof) down with her tomorrow, I think, and said aunt is one of those people whose house is always clean and everything is always in its place, so I have spent a large part of the afternoon cleaning up the house. You know, I really need to keep on that BEFORE we have people coming over. You'd think that being a stay at home mom would leave me with plenty of time for cleaning, but in fact, no. Where does all the time go, anyway? I have half a post percolating in my head about that but I don't have time for the usual navel-gazing at the moment. I have worn myself out and my bed is very flat and nice so I would really rather be there than here.
