Life as a parent is full of DUH moments. Like when your little girl sleeps terribly through the night, and cries and whines and moans about going to sleep for her naps and it is driving you crazy, and you are losing your patience because you're burning up from holding the little strugglemonkey in her pink fleece sleeper even though you just changed into shorts... uh.. too warm. Fleece. I am wearing shorts.

So I stripped her down to her pretty blue frilly diaper and sat her in the floor, where the screeching stopped and she began playing happily with the discarded sleeper and an overturned laundry basket.

Huh. Babies get too warm too.

Also, she has bed-head! I think yesterday was her first time with that. She didn't really have enough hair before to get messed up whn she sleeps. She still doesn't have a whole heck of a lot but she's getting there.

Since this post has "Evelyn" all over it, I think it's time for a general update. She is pulling up pretty well now, and she thinks that baby prison (the playpen) was made for standing--she doesn't want to do much else than stand while she's in there. She has accidentally sat up by herself, but she can't do it reliably yet, though she can sit indefinitely if we sit her up... until she finds somewhere else to go. Her standing balance is getting pretty good. She is still crawling on her belly, though she is beginning to see the point in being on hands and knees--she's spending alot of time that way, rocking back and forth, but then when she decides to go somewhere, she tends to flop back on her belly. Lazy tot.

She likes to crawl under the end table and go to lots of places she isn't allowed to go. She is loving Baby Einstein right now, and she has also started throwing miniature tantrums when she doesn't get her way. That is kind of cute but will not be for very long, and she is still reasonably distractable when she does it, at least. She likes to be tossed around and tickled and also kissed--when she feels like it. She takes big-girl baths with either M or me and she thinks those are lots of fun. She enjoys wet washcloths, for eating and waving around like a flag. (I have no idea.) She prefers the mounting hardware on her toys to her actual toys--right now she is playing with the curved bar that attaches to her bouncy chair. She won't sit in the boucy chair, has never really liked it much, but she enjoys playing with it now like a toy... from the outside. She's outgrown the taggie toys I made her, which makes me kind of sad.. but of course, still still loves the tags on her actual toys. Go figure.

She says da-da and hi, and will occasionally say mama/baba, but she mostly just babbles. She waves really well but refuses to clap. We have been actively trying to teach her that since Christmas. I have taught her to turn the lights off when we leave a room... when I remember. I think that's pretty fun. She loves Mr. Burt Reynolds--he was on an episode of Golden Girls which we have seen twice, and her face lights up when he walks on-screen. Her favorite song is "Ain't No Sunshine" by Bill Withers. She gets excited when she hears it. She's also a big fan of silly noises. She is in love with her walker again now. I think she likes being able to go, and be upright, all at the same time. Mama likes it because I have finally gotten the area roped off so that she can't get into much mischief when she's in it. It's not pretty, but she can no longer go more than halfway into the dining area because I put large heavy tubs on either side of the table. I didn't want to write about this because I feel sick when I think about it, but she zoomed over there last week and yanked on the sewing machine cord and toppled it off the table. It didn't hit her, just landed in the chair, but it scared the crap out of me, so I can live with ugly tubs if it keeps her from the dangerous parts of the room.

She likes to touch stuff. I believe she likes to touch stuff a little more than the average baby. I have no other baby to compare her to, of course, but people who have had plenty of little kid experience have told me that. It doesn't really matter what it is, as long as she can touch it and turn it over in her hands and examine it and yes, maybe even lick it. "Don't eat it!" is something we say a thousand times a day. It really hasn't stopped her from trying to eat things, though. She likes to fully examine something before she tries to eat it, but once she's got it figured out, nothing will stop her from trying to put it in her mouth unless you take it away from her. This morning she covered herself up with a towel and waited for me to notice her and start asking where the baby was. She's played peekaboo for a long time but I don't think she's initiated it herself before. She likes to make up little games--neither M nor I can always figure out the rules but she can get pretty insistent about them. Right now, for example, I am supposed to be grabbing her hands and shaking them while making faces at her, while she pretends to pull away from me while coming close enough for me to catch her.

She has four teeth and possibly two on the way. She's getting bored with purees now that we've started feeding her other stuff. She likes pickles from Mama's cheeseburger, cheese, lemons, ice cream, french fries--which I wasn't going to let her taste but my mom gave her some and she LOVED it, bananas, apples, fruit puffs, cheerios, tomatoes, biscuits and gravy (also given to her by Granny..haha), and pasta. She does not really care much for pancakes, especially not with maple syrup (also at Granny's house...) I guess she's more Swedish than I thought. :) It's no wonder that she saw a picture of my mom today and started laughing, what with the way she eats at Granny's house! Mom is also planning to buy her a pony for that.

And, she is also greatly fond of attention from Mommy (or pretty much anyone else) so I had best go stop her from pulling books out of the bookcase now. Silly baby.
