Birthday Party!
May. 11th, 2008 11:11 pmA year ago tonight, I posted that we were off to the hospital. Things got progressively less comfortable from there. ;) My little girl is turning ONE tomorrow! I can't believe she's a year old. It is completely unreal. I have been thinking about her little tiny newborn body a lot lately. It's hard to believe that she was just a... lump... when she was born, when now she is all DOING stuff and getting into things and displaying her very own personality (usually when we wish she wouldn't.)
Today, we had her first birthday party! No, we didn't. Yes, we did. No, let's reschedule. Yes, let's do it. Wait. Stop. Argh. We did have the party today but it was touch and go there for a while. Evelyn started getting semi-sick with a cold earlier in the week, so we were on the watch for party rescheduling. She never really got sick-sick, though, so we were feeling good about it all until M came down with a cold on Friday. I started feeling like I was getting sick myself yesterday, but we had a PILE of stuff to do and did not have time to give into it. We just barely decided to keep trucking on with our original plans yesterday, and we managed to get the party/house prep mostly taken care of (though we were both half-dead by the time we went to bed.) Anyway, just as we were congratulating ourself on a job well done, my phone rang. My aunt was on her way to the ER, party plans? Unknown. I ended up having to call my mom this morning at nine to see if we were still having a party. ;) We did, and everyone but my aunt and uncle came. She's okay, btw.
So, a party! We even put up streamers and balloons! Evelyn is terrified of balloons! She was seriously trembling from it when one got near her. She overcame it by the end of the day but she was still not thrilled about them. Silly dorko baby.
We opened presents! She made out nicely, and I was happy because she got mainly clothes, and not a huge pile of plastic toys she doesn't need (though there were plenty.) Seven and a half outfits! That's pretty good. I love dressing her up, I have to say. She also got her first Bible, with her name written in silver on the front. I asked for that for her from my parents for some holiday because I still have the one I got when I was little and I always loved it that my name was right there on the cover.
Then we blew out candles! She almost grabbed herself some fire in the process so that's why I am holding her arm back.
And... we ate cake. Or, well. we ate cake, and Evelyn demolished her puppy cupcake cake without doing much in the way of partaking in the chocolateyness... which is good, really, because it was store-bought and full of chemical grossness.
I made an ice cream cake for the rest of us. I know that I am not Martha Stewart on the cake decorating front, but I thought it turned out okay. It tasted really good. Homemade ice cream cakes really impress guests, by the way, so if you ever want to spend an entire day fiddling with it, only to create a dessert that you have to fuss over to make sure it stays frozen and is then impossible to cut... I can hook you up. It's really easy, but time-consuming because you have to keep throwing it in the freezer between steps.
A year. My goodness. Time flies when you're having fun...
