Feb. 23rd, 2010 10:51 pmljArchive is such a tremendous time suck. I opened it half an hour ago and searched for "chair" in my journal's archives and have been sitting here ever since, reading the most random things ever from the past few eyars. I was hoping that I'd find when we bought M's "new" computer chair (it's been at least four or five years) but"new chair" brought no relevant results and "chair" was much too broad. I might not have ever mentioned it, but it was outrageously expensive (for a chair) and I bought it for him because he liked it and because his old chair was dreadful and he is a tall guy with an occasionally bad back--he needed a good, adjustable chair and this one is adjustable every which way you can imagine. And, so he turns to me tonight and says, "has it been long enough that I can admit that I don't really like this chair?" Naturally, I said no, and then I beat him relentlessly with spiked clubs, and then I posted about it on the internets. No, I mean, that's not what happened at all. Instead, I said, "here, try mine." and we swapped chairs on the spot for a trial run. My chair is just a year old, and while it's okay, it's covered in this mesh fabric that irritates the back of my legs terribly, even with pants on. As opposed to shorts, I mean. Anyway, he is potentially happier and I am potentially happier. We'll just have to wait and see how this tremendously exciting drama plays out.
I even bore myself.
The munchkin is sick, sadly, which never makes for fun times. She woke up crying miserably an hour or so ago, apparently from bad dreams. It was so pitiful because she just could not get over those dreams. She couldn't tell us what had even happened and she couldn't even respond to sillyness. (She is particularly susceptible to sillyness. In fact, I have upon occasion completely changed her mood from tears to cheers by informing her that I was going to hang her upside down for a moment to reboot her, and then do so. I guess I think my child is a Microsoft product?) But she is asleep again and hopefully she will remain that way until morning. She tends to sleep badly when she's sick, but then, who doesn't? I have a feeling I may not escape it this time myself. I sure hope I'm wrong. Anyway, today has been an extremely low-key sort of day. I knew she was getting sick all day, but she refused to admit it until late in the evening. It's fascinating in a way, seeing how someone else begins developing symptoms. Also, she wants to drink something else that does not give her boogers.
Kids are funny.
Evelyn has decided lately that she wants to move in with my parents. She's spent the night with them at least once a week for approximately the last month. I know that she loves us and I know that she really does like being at home, but sometimes it does sting a bit when she cries for her Granny and says she doesn't like it here, and that being at home can't make her happy. Seriously, where does she come up with this? My parents basically do whatever she wants when she's there. Ice cream for breakfast? SURE! I don't worry about what they feed her or when they make her go to bed (they don't, actually--she usually conks out at about midnight, or, FOUR HOURS past her normal bedtime) because.. well, she's at Granny's and there are special rules for Granny's house. However, it's gotten to the point where she thinks she gets to go spend the night any time we see them, whether I go up for a visit or they come down here. It's an hour and a half commute one way, so it's not like we're that eager to be running back and forth to pick her up and drop her off. Plus, my parents love having her but I know that it's hard to run after a kid all the time. Anyway, I think we're goin gto have to cut her off a little bit because she just can't do it every week indefinitely. In the meantime, I've had more time than usual to myself this past month. This weekend, she went home with them on Friday night and we went up on Sunday to get her. M and I had the most incredibly useful day we've had in a long while. We hung pictures, we worked on woodworking projects, we worked on computers, we went out for lunch, we did a little light shopping, we cut his hair, we carried things to the basement, we packed up boxes of stuff for basement storage, we were crafty and yet, we had some time to relax too. It was GRAND.And at the end of the day, the quiet house just reminded us of how lucky we are to have such a funny, lively kid. Perfect.
