Dec. 16th, 2010 11:41 pmI was really enthused about this week and the whole Christmas spirit. I have a small child! We can DO stuff! Baking and crafting and present wrapping and house fixing! On Monday, I was a domestic goddess. We made candy, we wrapped presents, we did three different crafts, we did all the laundry, we cooked a nice wholesome dinner. And then at the end of the day, I looked around and realized... that I had pretty much blown through the best of the things I had planned for the week. The rest of the week has pretty much derailed from there. It hasn't been a bad week or anything, but it sure didn't go in quite the direction I had planned when we got started.
So we're a week away from Christmas and I am in fairly good shape with the presents and the house. The tree goes up immediately following Thanksgiving, but we don't always get around to doing quite everything we're "supposed" to. I finally put the presents up above the bookcase this afternoon. We have built-in bookcases in our living room, and two years ago (or maybe one? But I think two.) I came up with the idea of putting some of the prettier presents at the top. The goal was really to keep certain small folks from opening them prematurely but it turns out that it looks really really nice to decorate with presents. I've had fun wrapping presents this year. Evie likes to help, or at least I've been able to do most of them while she is with me. Hers I had to do while she was gone, but mostly we've wrapped everything together, which is pleasant. It's like she's a real little person sometimes!
Speaking of wrapping presents... I wrapped a small present for my niece in a soup can and it makes me grin every time I look at it. You know the cans with the peel-back lids? I opened one on the bottom, cleaned it out and then put the present in from the bottom and the hot-glued the bottom lid back on and covered the outside in scrapbook paper. I even fashioned a paper ribbon and a cover for the top to get rid of the soup references. It looks soo cute. I can't wait to see her reaction when she opens the lid on it. Of course, she is fifteen so her reaction will probably be less enthusiastic than I hope. She is pretty down on the whole Christmas spirit thing this year. I'm pretty sure it's something she puts on so as to get out of any of the work involved in getting ready for Christmas. She hates putting up trees and all that goes with it.
We are in the middle of an ice storm event, which was less extreme than I think it was forecasted. Who woulda guessed, drama queens at the weather channel. Huh. It hit other areas a little harder than it hit here.. it's just disappointing because I decided yesterday that M would have to stay home from work. He has an annoyingly strong work ethic, so he almost never stays home for illness or weather. Alas, the roads were clear enough this morning that he went on to work. Drats. It would have been a nice day! Of course, he used all his vacation for the year going to Sweden this summer so it would have been a pretty expensive treat, but whatever.
