it's a sin to be fading endlessly

When the optometrist's office called me yesterday to let me know that my glasses had arrived--did I mention that I went to the eye doctor on Monday? Can't remember.--I gave in to impulse and desire and scheduled a pick-up time for this afternoon. And since they close at two on Friday, my appointment was scheduled for one, which meant that I regretfully had to leave work at eleven. SHUCKS. So, I have had a nicer-than-average day at work in that I wasn't there. Oh, and there was no faking it, leaving at eleven for a one o'clock appointment--my eye doctor is in Morehead. It's been three years since I've been there (yes, I am a bad, bad girl but these things cost $300 so I guess I avoid going to some degree.) so I didn't quite see the point of finding an eye doctor in Frankfort. I had a traumatic experience as a child with an optometrist who made me cry. I like to stick with what I know!

So, new glasses, lunch with my mom--which was good but would have been better if I hadn't found a hair in my sandwich, and better still if that hair wasn't found by taking a bite, feeling the strand and then pulling it out of my teeth. Yuck. Actually, I am lucky in that hairs don't wig me out that badly. I mean, it's gross, and I did send it back and get a new sandwich, but it doesn't bother me like it does some people. Anyway. It rained all day today and my hair was driving me crazy, so I thought that bad hair + afternoon off work + being in a town where I know where to go for these things without coming out crying, which yes, happened to me here = walking next door to see if someone could cut my hair. So, yes, new haircut, and new glasses, and then (after a few non-exciting hours) I had a DATE. With a MAN. I guess the man is usually referred to as my husband, but that is not nearly as scandalous. You could argue that it's kind of sad that we planned a date and then had fast food (eh, kind of. iChing, "Asian with Attitude") and then shopped for mixers at Bed Bath and Beyond, and in separate cars. Because.. we had to throw out our mixer this week due to a raw meat episode gone horribly awry. (But admittedly tasty. Just more expensive than we had planned. And eventually I'll stop talking about the meatballs.)

Speaking of which, though.. anyone has any ideas on what we should cook for our cooking night, if we have it this weekend? Or future cooking nights, at that. It doesn't necessarily need to be fancy big, just more than we would make on a weekday. (Since I had microwaved baked potatoes twice this week, fast food once and ate out tonight.. this is very open for interpretation. And if you are wondering why that adds up to four instead of five.. that's cause my short-term memory sucks. Apparently.)

In the meantime, I need to read more WoT (enter Faile, stage right. I was always vaguely annoyed by her along with everyone else but then M giggled and said that she reminded him of me and so I have grudgingly become a Faile fan. Actually, though, RJ writes female characters better than male characters in my opinion, so it's not too hard to like her.) Now I think we're just waiting for Aviendha and then the major characters will be introduced. I am so so behind for book 11! If I don't take a certain person's advice and just read it anyway..

What on earth is mixer? :)

Photo of the new hairdo and glasses! ;)

The glasses are not at all noticeable. They are pretty much exactly like the old ones except for the color. The haircut.. we'll see. Not sure whether it will be noticeable or not either.. haven't fixed it yet myself.

A mixer is.. you know. A little hand-held electric kitchen gadget with two beaters (metal whisk-like things, but much sturdier) with which you mix ingredients. Usually cakes or stuff like that, not beef and pork. *grin* What do you call them?

Hehe ... okay ... so we do call those things mixers ... I must have just had a blonde moment but in my defence I got confused by (a) the 'bed' and 'bath' of Bed Bath and Beyond and (b) the raw meat discussion .... first I thought it might be something for the bathroom and then I thought it might be a powder that you mix with raw meat ... oops :)

Gotcha. Bed Bath and Beyond is a big home-type store chain.. I hadn't really thought about it but it seems like a large portion of their stuff is kitchen-related so it's kind of weird that it's not in the title, but I guess it didn' make the cut since it doesn't start with B.

Faile... that would be TDR. Only seven more books to go before you can read KoD then. Hmmmm...

And I wasn't giving any advice, I was just discussing a purely hypothetical situation. ;-)

[identity profile] same-sky.livejournal.com 2005-10-08 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, right. It IS going to be painful to not start reading as soon as it's out. Maybe I should order it from Amazon and hope it arrives a few days late.. that will give me an excuse. Hmm. :)

I'm nearing the end of TDR this afternoon--did you look it up or are you just THAT GOOD? ;) Just met Aviendha, too. It's a little hard because M just finished the 6th Harry Potter and so I've been trying to talk to him about that but I keep using words like "Darkfriend" and "channel". He is making fun of me, of course, but I suppose I deserve it.

Believe me, the boy never has to look up WoT information. He's just that good. It's a little frightening. He and one of our friends will call each other and have whole conversations just about WoT. I don't know how either of them keep track of all the minutuea.

[identity profile] same-sky.livejournal.com 2005-10-10 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I have a burning question for you regarding WoT, btw.. I have wondered several times before but never got around to asking because it is somewhat less than important. :) I know that you're one of the disillusioned who quit reading. M is, too.. the last one he read was Winter's Heart, and was so disgusted at the wordiness and lack of plot movement that he said he wouldn't read any more until he was finished, so at least there would be a resolution, for once. He'll do a re-read then but until then, he's just not interested. So.. I was wondering if you were a no-more disillusioned reader or if you were planning on picking it back up when it's done.. and if you're not planning on reading any more at all, does Mike tell you what's going on or do you not care? Just curious. I still enjoy it but there are certain things which annoy the crap out of me, so I can see the point sometimes.

I really just don't care about it anymore at all. Sometimes I do read the posts on FFF, but I really can't remember most of it. The stuff I remember is all fake *lol*. I like the totally goofy theories way better than the actual plot. If they tell me Moriane has come back I might be inclined to read it.

[identity profile] same-sky.livejournal.com 2005-10-10 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* I was just curious. :) I am impatient to see Moirane come back, too. However, I am greatly reminded in this re-read that she was rather a bitch. Oh, well.

Dangit, I never got this reply to my inbox. Good thing C caught it. And no, I did not have to look that up. I have a pretty good grip of what was going on in the first 6-7 books. After that I tend to get a bit confused. Or maybe it really is RJ getting confused when the plot got totally out of hand? By the way, have you been reading his blog? He's actually almost a nice guy there, trying to answer questions and all. Nothing about the plot, of course. Heaven forbid that he should slip who killed Asmodean!

[identity profile] same-sky.livejournal.com 2005-10-10 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I've read it except for the last week's worth, as I totally forgot about it again. You know, that whole thing about Asmodean irritates me because he keeps saying that any idiot--basically--should be able to figure it out and it was more than obvious to anyone who was even barely paying attention... and yet. No.

I personally have a pretty bad memory for details like which book something is in. I remember more about what's going on with the characters as they progress, but not the specifics of which book is which. I'm impressed with your memory, though! See, that's why you don't reread before each release and I do, apparently. :)
