another short worthless post
Nov. 14th, 2005 08:53 pmMy parents came down this morning to go look at houses with us. We saw three, of which two were ones we hadn't seen before. I am firmly in freaked-out mode, though, so I don't even have any commentary. How can I worry so much about buying something that I want to have so badly? It's the commitment factor--paying on something for thirty years, that's insane. I have gone through my life and so far I've only found one thing that I want to keep around for thirty years, and that is M and he was cheap! ;)
Anyway, then they went home and we have been gaming and now there is bread baking and I feel like I'm going to fall asleep in my chair. It's been a good weekend, four days spent out playing with the boy, and now it hurts to get back to the daily routine. Two more weeks until another four day weekend, though. Can't complain too much, I guess. :)

Date: 2005-11-15 03:00 pm (UTC)We continued to look. We had hired a realtor to help us understand the paperwork (in AZ, realtors can give legal advice). We trusted her assessment of the properties (e.g. about how recently they'd been treated for termites and general condition of the house). We found another house in January 2004, and while the paperwork was still daunting, Chris felt much more comfortable with this purchase. Every week or so, he would look around and say, "April, we OWN this house! This is OUR house! OURS. We can paint it, we can put a hole in the wall if we want. We don't have any landlords to answer to. This is OUR HOUSE." He was so proud.
So, my advice to you is to calm down and try to enjoy the looking process as much as possible. Hire a realtor that you trust, and trust them to help you. Yeah, they want you to buy a house, but they want you to be HAPPY, so that when you sell your house, you use them again.
If you're panicking, chances are that you've got a reason to panic. That's when having others (like your parents) coming along with you is helpful. Trust them -- but also trust your gut. Back out if your gut tells you to. If your gut is just freaking out in general (and not about anything specific), then trust your parents and your realtor. They won't steer you wrong.
