Thursday Music Blogging

Two nights before our wedding, we had the rehearsal at the church. Our wedding was pretty low-key, so it wasn't that surprising that we realized that we had a few unresolved issues. As it turned out, we rather hated all the vows that the pastor (my great-uncle) had in his stock vow book, so we had to go come up with our own. Hated is a strong word.. they just didn't feel right. So we took a bunch of different things from different places and faxed the outcome to Uncle John the next morning so he could read through it a little before the ceremony. We were extremely happy with them, except a year later we realized that we didn't actually say "I do" anywhere in the vows. We also had realized that we didn't have much in the way of music, so we made a couple of CDs..one for the wedding and one for the reception. I unpacked CDs tonight and saw the reception one, so I put it in the player while I cleaned. Then I thought, hey! I can write about the songs of our wedding instead of a real entry! No one will ever notice!

Undantag - Bo Kaspers Orkester (translation: Exception)
You and me / We're of a different kind / We're an exception
(Translated lyrics) Mainly, it's on the CD because it's sweet, it's Bo Kaspers (which M likes) and I don't hate it. :) Just kidding.. I like it, and I don't dislike Bo Kaspers, either, except that my favorite thing about music is the words and so it kind of irritates me to listen to music in another language. I just can't enjoy it for the sound without the words, even when it's pleasant. My favorite memory of this song being played at the reception was my father-in-law, who kept smiling approvingly at our choice of song and translating it for me.

When I Said I Do - Clint Black with Lisa Hartman Black
Forever you and I will be the ones who found out what forever means / When I said I do, I meant that I will / Til the end of all time / Be faithful and true, devoted to you / that's what I had in mind / when I said I do
Sometimes (like today) when I hear this, I still get tears in my eyes. It's rather the sweetest song ever.

When I Say Nothing At All - Keith Whitley
It's amazing how you can speak right to my heart
The real version. :) It's a nice song, in general, but it was more of a family thing that we added it. I know I've mentioned this before, but Keith Whitley was my grandmother's nephew. I never met him much, really, as I was about ten when he died, but my dad and uncles certainly did.. he appears in a bunch of the pictures from their partying days. Anyway, remember that my niece? Is named Whitley? Yeah. That's why. :)

My Baby Just Cares for Me - Nina Simone
This was on the first CD that M ever made for me, titled appropriately Our CD 1. He sent it to me for my birthday, I think, in 1999. There were two of them. And y'all, my baby? He just cares for me.

Mad About You - Sting
But every step I thought of you / Every footstep only you
I have no other commentary, really. "I'm mad about you" kind of says it all, doesn't it?

We're Only Love - Counting Crows
We're only love, at its best or worst
Since I have a somewhat unhealthy obsession with Counting Crows, it was pretty important that we add a song in there. Unfortunately, they're really not known for their love songs. This is one of the first not-on-CD releases that I found in the days of Napster and a T1 on campus.

Fly on the Wings of Love - Olsen Brothers
I think this won the Eurovision song contest the year we got married.. maybe the year before. In any case, we liked it, and we played it a lot. It's a little corny but sweet.

You Make Me Feel - Jeremy Toback
And I've got you / When the day gets dark / To light my way
Do you remember the scene in the Princess Bride, where the grandfather is reading about the kiss? "Since the invention of the kiss there have been five kisses that were rated the most passionate, the most pure. This one left them all behind."? He was wrong. That's all I'm gonna say about that. And by the way, this is Our Song. We were pretty traditional with the music for when I walked down the aisle, but after much debate, we played this as we turned and walked out together. We were afraid it would be too loud, too fast, too MUCH. And by the way? It was absolutely perfect. It's one of my favorite memories about our wedding. When I think about it now, it makes it feel like the end of a movie where they play a song while the couple gets married.

Forever's As Far As I'll Go - Alabama
This is the song that they played at my brother's wedding. It was my addition for no other reason than that--remember everything, she said, when only memory remains. However, the lyrics are pretty darned lovey wedding-appropriate.

She's All I'll Ever Need - Ricky Martin
We were a little embarassed by this one even when we put it on the CD. It was another song from when M was here on a visit. It was on the radio All. The. Time. So, although neither of us really LIKED it, it was a) sweet and b) associated with some of our happy memories, so it got added. We drew the line at Mambo Number Five, though...

Brown-Eyed Girl - Van Morrison
This one.. harder to explain. I don't have brown eyes. It's not really a love song. Actually, it kind of disturbs me when I think about it. (First there's the line about making love in the green grass, and then "I saw you just the other day / My, how you have grown". EWWW. In my world, you only say "my, how you have grown" to a child, but okay.) And yet, it's one of those "us" songs anyway.. it's definitely associated with the summer I was in Sweden. I think there was dancing involved. I don't really remember. But we still sing and make goo-goo eyes at each other when it comes on, so clearly it was a valid addition.

When We Dance - Sting
I will love you more than life, if you'll only be my wife.
Do I even need to say it? How much it made me smile when the boy looked up and said, "I know one.."? I hadn't even heard it before. I think it was even more of a romantic gesture to me because my main worry a few months earlier had been.. do you really want to get married? Not that he said he didn't--as a matter of fact, he got annoyed that I would think that he would suggest marriage if he wasn't sure but that's what the immigration proceedings do to you. Btw, I shouldn't have googled the lyrics just now. Not quite so happy if you listen to all the words.

Hooked on a Feeling - Blue Swede
Yeah. Well. Not sure, exactly, but it's on one of our CDs. During the summer I was in Sweden, we made CDs 3 - 7 that contained basically every song that both of us could stand to listen to. We played them to DEATH. All the time. Most of these songs are from those CDs, actually, which is where most of the sentimentality came from. Anyway, who doesn't love a little ooga chaka, right?

Awww that's so lovely!

So it should be 'When I didn't say I do'...
