Evening in Fall

Today feels like a Friday and that is so not good. We went out for a nice dinner (more proof that it isn't Friday, because although we go out on Friday more often than not, it is usually not a nice dinner because M gets home so late that all the nice places--except for Johnny Carino's--are so full that M would rather have me run the car repeatedly over his left foot than stand around waiting to get in. I mention J.C. specifically because good grief, am I the only one sick to death of that place? They're always busy but they have a lot of seats so there's not a wait. I guess to be fair, I should point out that a stomach flu/food poisoning semi-ruined my favorite food (fettuccine alfredo) for me several years ago, and the metformin-queasy doesn't care much for Italian in general, so my opinion is a bit biased. ANYWAY. We went to Applebee's and M had a Tyler Florence meal and it made us want to watch FoodTV more again. Why have more restaraunts not done this? Imported a TV chef for meal creation? He has always been one of the ones whose food I'd like to eat, and in large part because he tends to not do fancy schmancy things just for the sake of being fancy. I hate pretentious food. (Hello. Have I mentioned that I am from a region of good southern cooks? We are not about the Fancy.) His food was apparently really good, and the fries were covered in a garlicy herby sauce that made them the most interesting fries I have ever put into my mouth and you should know that I am a connoisseur of the french fry. (I wouldn't say the BEST because they were basically unlike french fries at all, but they were good.) We have been pretty down on Applebee's of late because we had about three bad experiences in a row but it was really, really nice. But now we are home and I have answered email and got a few things done and now I am posting here, and I am running out of time for computer games and whining, because it is, indeed, not Friday, and that means that tomorrow? I have to drag my butt out of bed at six again. I HATE THAT.

Fall has arrived with a vengeance, and as I am wearing dressy pants every day due to the ceasefire called on jeans at work recently, I am freaking freezing all the time. Yay! Or, not. But the point here is really not about the temperature because at least it's not raining and cold anymore, just cold, and I will take that over the other. M should have written about this because if I do say so myself, I exhibited Good Wife Tendencies yesterday morning. It was raining LITERALLY like CATS AND DOGS (ha! Sorry, M.) and M decided that because he is mean like a... really mean person... um, whatever.. that he wanted to take my car to work instead of his car, which was conveniently left in the driveway for him. So, he drove to my place of employment and switched to my car. I had promised, while there were clear skies outside, that I would come out to say hi to him when he pulled in, but ten minutes before he arrived, the heavens opened and the puppy dogs and kitty cats started plummeting to the earth. So, he pulls in and I am sitting there considering whether or not I want to actually get soaking we to just say hello to Boyo (we DO have cell phones, you know) when it occurs to me that I brought my umbrella inside, and M will be traipsing across the soggy parking lot to get to my car from the space he found, and he will be Very Wet. So I grab the umbrella and run outside so that I can escort him from one vehicle to another. Awww! At least, I thought it was sweet until I mentioned that night that I had been nice that morning, at least, and he said... "huh? when were you nice?" or the equivalent. SEE IF I EVER DO ANYTHING NICE FOR YOU AGAIN. So anyway, the sun came out this morning, and it was all pretty and sunny and bright, and we have a blue gazillion gigantic trees in our yard. And, most of the leaves have fallen. They are all golden and crunchy, and they cover the yard and the driveway to such a degree that you actually cannot tell where the driveway is. Except, I kind of remember where it is because I've sort of seen it before, a few times. And when the sun shines on the yard, it looks like a fall fantasy wonderland. You don't really get that sun shining feature in pictures very easily, so I can't show you the super light powers. I can show you a little bit how crazy the whole thing looks, though.

Fall has arrived. Neighbors unaffected.
Fall has arrived. Fussy neighbors remain unaffected.

Doesn't that look crazy? Poor M is going to be busy busy getting rid of those leaves all by himself! ;) Because I am a girly girl and raking is so not my thing. By the way, their yard looks perfect like that at all times. Also, see the horse fence? Horse fences are one of my very most favorite things about Kentucky. I love having a neighbor with one.

(I'm sorry. I know this post was probably hard to read because of all the rambling but it was a lot of fun to write. This is very much an exact combination of how I think and how I talk. I do always tell long stories, but I am pleased with my ability to remember what my original point was. I just think that the tangents in life? They happen to be the most interesting parts.)

I love love love this post. I am still laughing from the cats and dogs. And your neighbors? How? HOW???? How do they do that? Do they have hired help?

[identity profile] same-sky.livejournal.com 2006-11-03 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. :)

The neighbors do indeed have hired help. A couple of guys with gigantic riding mowers come and do the mowing slightly more than once a week in the summer. You know what's even better? They mow it diagonally every now and then just so you can always see those stripes. It looked like that when we moved in so I have no idea how they got it to look that way, or just how they got the moles to live in OUR yard. :)

I was truly laughing out loud. There isn't even just one thing, I think you've got a great voice telling stories. Ramble away! :-D

I'm glad you laughed! Honestly, M laughed a lot when he read it too, and that's when I knew that I wouldn't have any comments on it. Usually, no one likes it when I'm funny. *grin*

Oh my god, i can't believe you look out on to a view like that. I love love love your rustly leaf-filled yard but I also love love love that horsey fence. We have a lovely stud area near Sydney and they are so beautiful! Me, I must come and visit you.

[identity profile] same-sky.livejournal.com 2006-11-03 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It's really nice to have neighbors like that who do all this work so we can appreciate the rewards. You should definitely come visit, yes!

That picture, and the caption, are hysterically funny.

Thank you! The caption was M's favorite part, too.

That's not a yard, it's an outdoor carpet. They vacuumed all the leaves away while you were at work.

[identity profile] same-sky.livejournal.com 2006-11-03 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Obviously, they didn't vacuum so much as use their leaf blower to blow them at us. :)

[identity profile] lizardek.livejournal.com 2006-11-03 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Do your neighbors freak out completely if any of your leaves so much as TOUCH their perfect yard? Hilarious!!

[identity profile] same-sky.livejournal.com 2006-11-03 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
We have been afraid of that, but they haven't said anything. Honestly, I've never met them and M has only talked to the guy once. M did apologize for the state of our yard, as we inherited a giant neglected mess, and he just waved it off, which was nice, and then he brought us some tomatoes from his garden the next day. He was saying that the previous owners hadn't paid any attention to it in years and he understood that it'd take us a while, and M told him that most of our work was indoors at the moment, so he was okay with it. Thank goodness! But truthfully, they just don't have that many trees, and the ones from our yard don't blow so far into their yard that they can really even tell it from their house. It's a really big yard.
