Baby shower today at work! Very exciting, very nice, tasty food and lovely gifts! M left work early to attend, too. The only bad part was that [livejournal.com profile] starrflowerr wasn't able to be there, although I more than understood--she's quite sick. There was a surprising (hehe) ducky theme, and I loved it all. So much cuteness!

Remember how I talked about M's broken computer? I ordered him a new hard drive, monster-sized, and it arrived today. He plugs it up, installs Windows, and I take over. We got to a certain point and then went out for a celebratory dinner (unofficially 35 weeks today, and baby shower, and just general niceness of the whole life thing ) We talked of computers, and what he could have lost. We knew that his C drive was gone, and one other unknown partition. Was it D, which contains programs? That would be vaguely inconvenient but not dreadful. Was it F, which contained downloaded files? Again with the inconvenience but probably nothing irreplaceable. Or would it be E, which contains every file he has ever used? Anyway, I pointed out that the error message was somewhat vague, and there was a theoretical chance that he could plug in the broken drive since we now had the thing running to see if we could copy everything over (say, the OS had really messed itself up but it could still be read.) And guess what! It worked! I don't know how the whole thing will turn out (we are formatting the large drive and backing up the data--it was E, by the way and of course.) but it looks like M has snookered me again. He claims that he tested it before declaring it broken. I think he's lying. Seriously, there is some sort of an issue going on but we don't know exactly what it is. The important thing seems to be that we're getting his data, which we thought we had lost. It's tough, this geek stuff. I could have written more about it and explained what it is that we tried and suspected and have planned, because we are very interested in that sort of thing. However, we're almost the only ones so I will leave one paragraph to cover it.

I put new sheets on the bed and showered before going there last night, and I finally got a good night of sleep! I woke up only twice, and both times it was great to come back to bed. It does seem like I am now greedy, and need more more more. Here's hoping that night two is just as nice as night one. I think I'll go find out.

How fun! Baby shower that is. The computer stuff is not really my bag. I'd smile appreciatively at the new hard drive for five seconds but that's about as far as I'd take it.

Both my husband and I would be interested in the 500GB harddrive and the efforts to resurrect the old one. We're almost as geeky as they come.

I was thinking exclusively of you when I said "almost the only ones". *grin* I have really never seen anything quite like what happened with this drive, but we think it was dead on the first day. Then he attempted to plug it up as a secondary drive in hopes of it being able to read it to get data. The case was open and he was holding the drive in his hand as he turned the computer on. The hard drive stayed silent and the BIOS saw no device. He was shifting it back and forth in his hand to see if it was spinning up at all, and it wasn't, but then it began humming and then when Windows came up.... it was his old desktop. THAT was the weirdest part, that it actually switched and booted from the broken drive even though the BIOS knew nothing about said drive and the other was set as the boot disk anyway. So, he was able to get all of his stuff, and we will be summarily destroying (because who knows who might find it?) and then tossing it out because we wouldn't dare trust it again. But yay, no lost data! :)

It was so great of everyone to go to so much trouble for the shower. It was really sweet and so nice. I should have written more about it and posted pictures but I was so sleepy that it sounded horrible. ;)
