Sounds exactly like what happened when our router went down. For some reason I couldn't get internet on my computer even when directly plugged into the modem. It made no sense. A new router solved our problems, but we were not geeky and didn't try any other alternatives b/c we just felt like it wasn't worth our time at that point (since we had no freakin' clue what we were doing).
