I was just going to say, huh? I have never heard of any such war and chalk it up to a southern thing. Since Beverly chimed in I'll go with her rural/city assessment instead. While I do see plenty of trucks around here, the few people I know who actually own trucks have *gasp* Japanese ones (Toyotas and Mazdas).

Not to sound snooty about it but, having grown up outside of NYC, having any vehicle made by an American car company was looked down upon. No one had trucks and German cars were best, followed by Swedish then Japanese. Or one could have a British car and be thought of as eccentric (and loaded). Moving to Maine changed that as the Swedish cars moved up in the rankings and the German cars dropped to third. With the advent of the minivan and then the SUV, much changed, and it's quite ok now to have an American made one of those.

Old habits die hard though. Of all of my family members, only one has an American car (my Brooklyn sister has a Saturn station wagon). My Dad has a Kia (aren't they Korean?), my mom and brother both have Subarus, my brother and his wife also have a Prius (Toyota), we have a Nissan, and all the others have VWs. Plus we have Calle, our $500 SAAB.
