I used to do that with Erik, too, and it worked wonders. I know I am grouchy when I am in pain, so I figure it is the same with little kids.
She is such a happy kid that it must be hard to see her like that. Fasten your seat belt, because two is almost here! The random anger and flinging and such can be very surprising.
