Happy New Year! Today was spent much like any other New Years, at my grandfather's house, eating cabbage rolls and gossiping about people who weren't there. No one called in "sick", making it less interesting gossip. We usually have at least one person who thinks that no one will imagine that someone who wakes up on New Years Day feeling sick was actually up too late ingesting large quantities of alcohol. (My family--at least, the "real" adults--does not drink, hence the evasions.) We left earlier than usual because the kidlet was in a rotten foul mood. Too tired from being with Granny all week plus too many people around, I think. I got up from the table and started working on the dishes so I could do my part enough in order to leave. It was rough. Thankfully, I don't believe in that old saying that whatever you do on New Years is what you'll do all year long. :)
I was gratified to find that Evelyn actually missed me, when we arrived last night. We went up to my parents last night and her face lit up when she saw me and she hugged and patted and kissed and beamed and smiled for a long time. She sometimes seems like she'd like to throw me over completely in favor of my mom. It's nice to see that absence really does make the heart grow fonder. :) After I got her to sleep last night, it was nearly eleven. We were at my parents, and all the adults were still awake to watch the ball drop. I kept dozing off, but woke up in time to usher in the new decade.
Anyway! This seems to be the time of year for resolutions. I don't want to get too into the whole idea of resolving anything because that seems to be the surest way to fail. Last year, my resolution was to wean Evie and I am proud to say that is now a done deal... so I guess resolutions don't always fail. This year, my resolution is to potty-train the girl. As of today, she is 92% potty-trained (based on successful trips versus accidents) so I am hopeful that we'll take care of that sooner rather than later. I hope. Also, that doesn't count night time. Don't you love having a percentage statistic though? We're geeks. Also, I'd like to put forth more effort into forging more of a connection between Evelyn and the in-laws. I am thinking of starting with a monthly snail mailing of some sort--pictures, cards, letters, etc, and the occasional email. At the same time--more Swedish language practice for her. I don't have a specific plan of action yet for that one though.
As for the old standby--M and I have already started working on eating better and exercising more, and that is not going to appear on this list. Darn it all, we shouldn't have to make resolutions about our health. It should come naturally, shouldn't it? Sad that it rarely does.
