My cousin brought her computer to us so we could see why the modem wasn't working. This was a week or so ago.. we returned it last Sunday and told her that the modem was almost certainly fried and that she needed a virus checker, pronto. I would have worked on it more but I got absolutely fed up with the thing. Spyware, virus-like behavior, etc. It was running extremely slowly, windows popping up all over the place, and even though it had a connection here (ours) I couldn't really access the internet because of all the junk it was throwing at me. Fifty windows opening and closing and opening again.. even typing in a url sent the thing into a panic and it couldn't actually get there. Completely unbelievable.

She called me the other night to let me know that they had run a virus program and they didn't HAVE any viruses. (Slightly superior tone, since we had said so positively that she had one.) I explained about updating definitions. They managed to work out how to do that and called back tonight, since it found something this time. M talked to her and explained that a virus can really wreak havoc on a computer and make it do all sorts of crazy things and that was the first priority, getting rid of those before getting the internet connection fixed.

Her response? "But it only found eight!"

Rofl.

ROFL! Only 8 huh? I don't think I've had 8, total! I did have one that Norton caught the other day, though, which is quite rare for me these days being so careful and much wiser about how to avoid getting them in the first place. I'm a freak about updating virus defs. Those people really impress me sometimes, you know? LOL!

I've actually never had a real virus. I had one word document with a questionable macro once, but I don't really count that. I used to keep virus programs installed and updated and all that, but it never found anything, so I finally gave up now and just install one periodically, update and run. Now it's even easier with the online checkers. I download a lot of stuff and M and I are on a pretty insecure little home network and he gets them occasionally, so at least in part, I'm just quite lucky. But still. EIGHT? And thinking that was a small amount?! WTF?! It was quite funny, though.

I know! She's pretty computer illiterate, but is she also DEAF not to have heard all the stuff in the news and all around her?!

People who have computers without virus protection obviously have more money than brains. This is especially dire when you realise how cheap computers are nowadays.

We actually sold them my old computer. Decent system but not excellent, compared to what's being sold now. I actually feel a little bad for that little computer.. it had such a pampered, well-loved life when it lived here with me, and suddenly, I send it off to live with them?!
