*May 18th: This post will be back-dated to reflect the actual date of writing in a day or two.*

I feel like I should write, but it's kind of hard because I have so much to say but I can't post it even if I write it all down. And also, I just have a little while before bedtime and I have a hundred things that I could be doing. Oh, and the keyboard shelf on my desk is now broken, so my chiropractor would have heart palpitations if he saw how I'm typing. So.. it's not all that easy to get started with writing.

It's Tuesday night, and we're all snug and secure in the new house. It's still a mess, but it's beginning to come together nicely. M has pretty much finished up the living room, except for incidental details, and most of the furniture is in place throughout the house. The kitchen is a huge disaster area, and so is the dining room (which can't be finished until the kitchen gets done.) It's my fault about the kitchen, of course, but it can't be helped. I have all the shelf paper on the upper cabinets done (minus the one over the fridge, which I won't bother with for a while because we don't have the stuff here for that area anyway.) It's taking me so long to get this done because I keep being interrupted by one thing or another, and of course, I'm not at home as much as normal.

I guess that brings me to work. I'm not really going to write about that here, btw, except in generalities, because I have no desire to add myself to the number of people fired over their blogs. Yesterday was overwhelming--I have a somewhat hard time envisioning myself ever really knowing what's going on, but I've been assured that it'll happen. I had the afternoon off today to go vote, which was nice. Had to go to Morehead to do it, though, and combined it with dinner at my parents. They rather treated me like they hadn't seen me in months, which is funny because I've seen them more in the last five days than in the three weeks before that. ;) My dad was in particularly fine form, talking about his current job (you know, the one with the work taken out of it.) Anyway, I've basically just been doing training-related activities. Everyone I've met has been very nice. Oh, and I got office supplies today! That was almost as exciting as getting rid of the giant fake spider that came with my cubicle.

The bad thing about today was that the cable people were late, and since I had to get to Morehead before the polls closed.. we don't get to have our internet back until Friday. *sob* We have a pretty full weekend, though, with potential visitors, so I guess this is better in a way--we'll have more time to force ourselves to work on the house. (See Kisha rationalize ..)

I don't even remember what I posted last. I guess it was Saturday. I hope MM didn't have any major problems related to the issue's launch, but I guess there's not much to be done about it even if it all fell apart. We spent the night with my parents that night, and both of us slept very poorly. We got a pretty early start on Saturday--we actually pulled out of the driveway at 8:25. The fish were not amused with the trip, let me tell you. I wasn't amused later in the day, either, when I climbed into the backseat and got soaked with the water that splashed out before we covered it in towels. The first night here was largely uneventful. M didn't sleep well, but I didn't do too badly. We went furniture shopping on Sunday morning (we had no dressers, due to the wonders of built-in furniture) and then my parents arrived with my car. We took them out to dinner to thank them for all the help they were with the move. M put the desks together on Monday but this is the first time I've actually used the computer for anything. I keep thinking of things I need to do online but when I remember that I can't, I get whiney and don't really feel like doing anything else here either.

Casualties of the move: two keyboard shelves, one blue vase that belonged to my Granny :( and one light rope. Of course, it's not all unpacked yet so it might add up to more.

I have worked for the state for 14 years, and some days it's still overwhelming. :-) For the record, i really don't think they can fire you over a blog. Freedom of speech and all that. And this isn't a private company, this is state government, so there are numerous protections in place for employees. If you want to know any more, you can email me, i'd be happy to chat with you about it.

I hope you got cable phone too? it's only $13.75 a month.

I don't know anything about how the state operates with regard to firing people over their blogs, but it's happened to quite a lot of people elsewhere. Might be better with a state agency, I don't know--just not planning on finding out. :) Hi, by the way, nice to meet you! Funny that you stumbled on my journal just now as we move.

Cable phone? Nope.. just the average, every day phone. :) How's that work?

The cable company hooks a box up outside (or wherever your cable hookup is) and then ties it into your existing house wiring, so the phones work just like a "regular" line - they are a regular line. When we got it back in october, it was free installation. It's $13.75 a month and is exactly like having a "regular" phone. We have a local phone number (all plant board phones start with 352, and they use the service themselves). I really like not paying $40 a month to bell south for basic phone service that we rarely use. But, now that you have bell south, it would be kind of a waste of the installation fee to swap.

I found your journal because one of my interests is computer scrapbooking, and I did a search, and there you were. There is one other person who does it, but yours was the one that kind of freaked me out, because you were moving here. it's such a small world. Nice to meet you too. I hope you like it here. And if you want a old-timer's opinion on nice places to buy houses, just ask. From the photo you posted, it looks like you live on the west end of town (where wal-mart - and everything else - is). I live on the east end, over by the golf course that you can see from I-64. Nothing much on this end, and I prefer it that way. I do like my kroger better :-)

The state can fire you for any reason in your first 6 months using the standard "it's just not working out" excuse. But after that, when you come off of probation, you have to do something really bad like cheat on your time sheet, steal things, stuff like that. They have also fired several people for spending hours a day on the internet. And people in my agency routinely get fired for inappropriate contact/conduct with minors (my agency runs several juvenile facilities, even one in Morehead). I know someone they have been trying to fire for 3 years (not really sure why), but he comes to work on time, does his job, etc. So they can't. Once you get that first 6 months out of the way, you're pretty much golden.

Welcome back online!! *big hug* I'm glad to hear it's all going well and you're settling in well to the new place and job! I'm hearing you on the office supplies excitment, that really is one of the best things about a new job :) Bummer about the vase :( What an exciting adventure though, and still so much to discover in the new town - woohoo!
