Soo what I want to know is.. is the desire to rip out one's hair in frustration genetic or is it an acquired urge? Would we still want to rip at our hair if we had never heard the expression, or is there something physiological about hair-pulling to relieve aggression? If you had never heard of anyone else feeling that way, would you have another urge instead? Cause when the urge strikes, it tends to strike hard, and it makes me wonder where it comes from. Not to suggest that any particular thing at work is driving me batty. Not like it bothers me that I can't figure out why part of my program doesn't work. No, no, not at all. Argh.

In other news, I'm doing something that has been on my to-do list for a year. I'm so in shock at my own behavior I'm not sure what to add. I made a book of proofs of all our digital pictures last year. The intent was to update it every month and that so did not happen even once. The new camera's pictures creates much much larger files than the old one, and the printing program crashed when I tried to work with them. I had almost forgotten that I had put the thing together, but while rounding up pictures for the INS, I remembered this book. We're going to bring it with us--they said they wanted to see family photos, and by golly, here they are. 49 photos per page, completely filling a medium binder. It occured to me tonight that a bit of batch processing to automatically resize the photos would make them useable again. I'm such a nerd.

I think a lot of tatters have a fixation with a massive project that will never get done. Bedspreads, for instance. Tableclothes. Vests. That's not to say that those things don't exist--you'll find bedspreads and tableclothes on ebay occasionally. Handmade in China and selling for peanuts--but that's another story. Some of them actually start their big projects, and a few of them even finish. But for a lot of people, it's just something to think about. I'm one of them--the thing I dream about is a set of curtains. Dainty, frilly, lacey curtains. I know me well enough by now to say with certainty that it's never going to happen. I'm just not motivated enough. I bought a set of $4 curtains when we moved in to sort of satisfy that need for a lacey curtains fluttering in the breeze, and I think it's given me an idea on how to actually achiieve my tatted curtain look later on! I'm going to attach tatted bits to a net-like material! The background of these curtains have that square netty look to them, and I've been holding up little bits and pieces to see how it would go. Fun fun! This is probably yet another large project (if not as crazy as solid tatted curtains) that won't even get seriously planned for, but I have it all here n my head and just take my word for it. It would look terrific.

I'm always coming up with grand projects :) If nothing else, they're fun to think about!

Most of the satisfaction with none of the work! That's just about as good as all of the satisfaction with all of the work--it equals out somehow, I think. :)

Compulsive hair-pulling actually has a name - trichotillomannia. Google says 2-6 million Americans suffer from it. If that many people are ripping out their hair, maybe it's genetic? Or maybe it's such a simple idea that most everyone thinks of it.

Cripes. Two to six million Americans.. that's a lot of people pulling out their hair. I had no idea it was such a widespread problem. I'm wondering if some of the balding guys don't confess to trichotillomannia so they don't look like just some old guy losing his hair...

Maybe those people who cut themselves for pleasure are taking the hair pulling one step further. I know I want to hurt myself when I am frustrated, though actual hair pulling never happens. Sometimes I will poke my gums with a toothpick really hard when I am frustrated and it hurts like hell and is sore for days. I don't know why I do it, but it feels so goooood at the time.

Pulling your fingers or toes or nose is just not as satisfying somehow.
