fireworks in the bluegrass
Jul. 4th, 2004 11:30 pmI felt a little out of sorts for missing the fireworks tonight--we were on our way home from Morehead. We didn't want to stay for it because it would be very late before we got home, and I didn't think it would be a good idea to be out driving around tonight with all the crazy people on the roads. So we came home, and just glimpsed a few flashes here and there once we got to Lexington and onwards. It's not like I desperately crave fireworks, but it just seemed sad to miss it. The resentment faded away around Midway, though (somewhere around twenty miles from home.) It's impossibly beautiful out there--rolling horse farms and leafy trees. It started raining in Lexington, and was coming down quite hard for a few minutes before tapering off to an oddly dry rain. I mean, the roads were wet, but there was no water splashing as we drove through. I can't really explain it--although there were drops of rain hitting the windshield, it seemed to be a pleasantly clear evening. Anyway, there were bursts of lightning, and as we drove on, we could see large fireworks off to the right now and then. The storm had caused it to become very dark all of a sudden, but also to the right, there was a low stretch of sky not covered by clouds, where the sun had not completely vanished yet. The effect was startling--it was completely dark where we were, but we were looking towards a dimly lit area. Suddenly, everything came together and I had a view worth remembering for a lifetime--a gently sloped stretch of land with one of those gorgeous horse fences sillouhetted against the lighter sky. Trees dotted the horizon, and they were so perfectly outlined that you could almost see the individual leaves. A barn sat on one side, and that fence--I'm so in love with those fences--stretched off as far as I could see into the distance. And in the middle, a huge explosion of light and color bursting into the darkness. It was quite honestly one of the loveliest views I've ever seen. We made an effort at driving through town to catch the tail end of the show in Frankfort, but we completely missed it. I wasn't all that disappointed anymore, though.. pardon me for being a little dramatic here, but I don't think I'll ever forget the absolute perfectness of that one moment on the highway.
