one time for the weekend.
Jun. 18th, 2006 07:46 pmLately, M and I have been very busy. There were several big things taking up our weekends... whether it be going to do something required with family, going to picnics with SHSK, my parents coming down, going to meet Carrie and Mike, etc. Then, during the weeks, we've been watching a heck of a lot of Veronica Mars doing errands and going to doctor's appointments and keeping everything.. kept. Spare time has been spent working on house things.. M has been sanding walls and I have been doing laundry and trying to keep order in the rest of the house. I'm not saying all of this to complain about being busy.. just that this weekend.. we didn't have a single plan, and it was fantastic.
M was supposed to work yesterday, doing inventory. They finished up enough on Friday that he found out just before he came home for the weekend that he didn't have to work. Nice surprise! That was part of the reason we didn't make any plans for yesterday.. the other part being that we thought the SHSK midsummer picnic was last night until about Thursday, when I looked at my Outlook calendar (I put both American and Swedish holidays in there, isn't that cute?) at work and noticed that midsummer is next week, and so why would the picnic be this week? And indeed, it wasn't. :) And today is our regularly scheduled week to not go visit family. So, neat!
We celebrated by getting a lot of stuff done, but slowly. Mainly, our weekend has revolved around food. We did a comprehensive grocery shopping trip. Every so often, we drive all the way across town to the luxury Kroger (as we call it). You know how I feel about the food in this town, but the Kroger on the east side is pretty nice. We're just never over there. We used to have big weekend cooking events, but that fell away when we got the house and have been spending most of our weekend project time doing something disgusting. So, last night was the reemergence of the weekend food event, which we never came up with a good name for. It actually turned into a weekend project instead of an evening project. Our plans fell apart at the last minute (apparently they can't slice meat super-thin anymore.. we were going to have stuffed lövbiff-style thingies.) so we ended up with an extra side dish (stuffed mushrooms, which are fantastic) that we fixed last night for dinner (steak, fried potatoes, bearnaise, yum) last night and with lunch today (sandwiches.. turkey for me, eggy for M. Salami sandwiches coated in egg in manner of french toast and fried. I could fix him nothing else, ever, and he would be happy.) And then for dinner.. homemade calzones. They were baking when I started this post, and now I am back from the consumption, so it is safe to say that they were also brilliant. AND! As side projects, because I am bossy, M has baked bread, prepared "super sandwiches" (cooked sausage, onion and green pepper, baked with cheese on giant bread and then refrigerated.. he used to make them a lot for breakfast and lunches but hasn't done so in a couple of years.) and put together a southwestern sauce for his stir-fry meals. The fun thing about the foodie weekend here is that everything turned out really, really well. And if you need me to put it into perspective--the weakest link (besides my quickie sandwich for lunch today) were the potatoes last night.. and you know how I feel about potatoes.
Also, there has been a metric ton of laundry, and the picking up of a lot of junk. I don't know if the balance of who picks stuff up shifted somehow when we moved or what, but I feel like I started picking stuff up and putting it away when we moved into this house and I haven't finished yet. Where does this crap come from? Why don't we put it away when we have it out to begin with? And why can I not have everything done all at the same time?
But the best best thing about the weekend has been that we have spent half of it doing almost nothing. We work for an hour, goof off for an hour. I personally have been playing Super Nintendo games. (Final Fantasy! Back when it was good! And Mario!) M has been playing some other stupid game, with real graphics and crap like that. (Who needs that? Give me a dozen colors, or maybe some text, and I'm happy. Course, I get motion sickness with some of his games so that might be part of it.)
This post has had an inordinate amount of parentheses. Also, M probably wants me to point out that he has finally finished sanding the drywall in the bedroom. Next up, primer, and more drywall, and maybe eventually we'll even get to the paint phase! That would be a miracle. We've been working on this stupid bedroom since March.. off and on (mostly off.) But I think when we finish it, we might start working on the sunroom, and that would be super-neat. :)
