Happy Houseiversary!
Jan. 31st, 2007 07:57 pmOne year ago today, we bought our house. To celebrate, of course, we bought said house a lot of pretty things this weekend. Since I am always complaining about the amount of work that goes on (less than there should be, to be sure) I thought that it would be a good time to talk about all of the lovely things that I am so, so happy about here.
My laundry room. I made this a priority while shopping for a house because at our last place, the washer and dryer were in a closet in the kitchen, and I HATED it with a fiery hot passion. The laundry room is way off on the opposite side of the house, hidden beside the sunroom, and that means that you can barely hear that it's running. There is a laundry tub, which we both adore, because it means that there's a place to handwash clothes and a place to clean out your paint brush, or any number of dirty jobs that require gigantic sinks.
Size. We have more space than we need. We have one very large room that is currently just stacked with our guest furniture. Someone was telling M that we needed to buy a new house now that we have a baby on the way, because that's what you always need to do. But we bought the house with a baby in mind, and we will still have more room than we need after Miss Ducky arrives. That is really, really nice.
Hardwood floors. They could still use a bit of refinishing, if we were ever to win the lottery, but they are really quite nice, and the scuff marks on them only contribute to the character of the rooms.
The basement. Because besides having too much living space, we have a basement, too. And although I am personally never down there, I really enjoy that M has a place to putter around and build his mandolins and stay out of my hair for a while. I'm kidding about that last part, but it hurt my heart in our apartment that he had to squeeze in all of his woodworking into two hours every other Sunday, at my grandfather's shop. There was just nowhere for him to work there.
Crown moldings. I have a real thing for moldings. We now have them in all three bedrooms, plus the dining room. They make me happy, honestly happy, when I see them.
Painting! The painting in itself hasn't been necessarily fun, but we have been dying to paint various walls for the entire time we've been together. We've now painted four rooms (counting the one in progress) and I love them all. The masking tape color in the computer room/soon-to-be nursery (above) is so pretty that I think I've talked M into using the same color throughout most of the house. The gray in the bedroom (right) is absolutely perfect, and is exactly what I had in mind. The tan/brown that we're putting in the guestroom/soon-to-be master bedroom will probably look really, really nice once we get it all done, and the off-white in the bathroom is nice and warm and will make the space look bigger than the blue did.
Cows. Okay, we don't have any cows, but we can hear them when we're outside, and that's enough for me. We're not really in the country, but it's kind of like we are. We can see pretty horses from our driveway, and this week, we noticed that there are llamas a mile or two down the road. And yet, it takes five minutes for me to get to work.
And best of all... this is where my boy is, and he's the nicest part by far. This whole house thing wouldn't have been any fun without him. Happy houseiversary, boyo!
