My baby has had a weirdo weekend
Jan. 13th, 2008 11:11 pmI promised myself that I would not make derogatory jokes about my parenting skills but I must confess that it is so easy to do so. Parenting is hard! There are just SO MANY opportunities to slip up! And it is on that note that I must tell you that I made my first call to Poison Control this evening! In my defense, I don't think there's anyone else I know who would have called them over this but still. We were on the way home from visiting family when I caught her chewing on an antibacterial wet wipe.. not that kind that you use to wipe bottoms but the kind you use to clean your hands while away from running water. It was laying on top of a bag of garbage that had shifted over within her reach while she was playing with my jacket, which was underneath it. She could have only had it for a short time before I saw her and took it away from her, but the container said not for use on children under two and to call for help if swallowed, and so the longer I thought about it, the more I thought maybe I should call--better safe than sorry, etc etc etc. She is, of course, fine. I am actually kind of glad to have that first poison control call over with, and also glad that I had the foresight to put the number into my phone. I am all super prepared! And stuff!
A few minutes after she sucked all the nasty antibacterial stuff out of a wipe (btw, does it make it any better that it was a clean, unused one because two came out instead of one?) she started screaming like mad. That was probably a contributing factor in my decision to call them, now that I think on it. She had been in the car seat for an hour and twenty minutes at that point, with another forty minutes to go. She was SO MAD. My niece discovered the absolute best way to cheer her up in the car seat, and I am so very thankful to her for doing so. She loves to hear all the ringtones played on a cellphone while seeing the thing lit up. So I was sitting there, pressing "play" on each one and then scrolling to the next. For forty minutes straight. It was so much fun! Bah. At least she wasn't screaming anymore.
This post has a real problem in chronological order. I am feeling so wild and disorderly!
Earlier in the terrible two-hour car trip this evening, I gave her a board book to play with. She loves books, but unfortunately, she loves them because they are tasty. She managed to work a section of the paper on the cover completely loose, and ate off a quarter-sized piece of the book. HELLO, BABY. Last night, you got so mad at a small clump in your applesauce that you gagged until throwing up. How is it possible that you will EAT PAPER? I scrubbed at her tongue with a blanket and I don't think she actually managed to eat all that much in total. It was a really fun trip!
Then we have her other weirdo problem! Yesterday (also in the car, strangely) she was playing with a toy that she got for Christmas. It's a bottle-type toy. Around the nipple on the top, there's a band of plastic in two shades of blue. As she was chewing on it, I noticed that the paint on one of those bands was coming off to reveal the other blue base. I was peeved because this is not the time when you want to see paint flaking off your infant's toy! I took it away from her, of course. A little while later, I noticed a weird speck of something in her mouth. Upon closer inspection, it was a small blue spot, under the gum below one of her teeth. I am not positive but it looks like a piece of that stupid blue paint that worked its way down the front of her tooth and is just under the skin. It's still there... I have absolutely no clue what I'm supposed to do about it. I decided that whatever it was, it was not an emergency situation, so I'll have to decide tomorrow if I should call the pediatrician. Again, I think I got a few "you are SO overreacting" looks from people on this one but what if it's lead paint? M points out that had it been lead paint, it would have stuck to the toy a little better. I suppose he's right on that. I can't find the thing anywhere online so I can't link to it. It was a cute toy though, and E loved it.
Also, she got extremely carsick on the way to my grandfather's this morning, and threw up more than she has ever done so before. While asleep. WTF? If you're asleep, you should not be carsick!
But we finally made it home and she was thrilled, and I was thrilled and M was (I assume) also thrilled. Visiting with family is good but oh is it nice to be home, where my child has not so far eaten anything poisonous or eaten paint chips. Yet, anyway.
