Evelyn Evelyn Evelyn.
Jul. 27th, 2008 11:46 pmOkay, I know that everyone thinks their baby is the smartest one ever, but M and I were totally blown away by a conversation we had last night with my mom, and I have to share it. We were actually talking about how we think she understands more of what goes on than we thought she did. M was telling Mom about how he had been talking to her that morning (eight hours earlier). He had asked her if she was bored. Blank look. Then he asked her if she wanted to go somewhere else, and she sat up, nodded vigorously and said, "NYAH!".. which means yes. It's so neat how she answers questions now.
Anyway, she was listening to him while he was telling this story, so he turned to her at the end of it and asked, "Do you remember that, Evelyn?"
"Nyah!" she answered, nodding. It's neat how she answers questions, sure, but... uhh.. sometimes she doesn't always know what she's answering. We get that, but we like to talk to her anyway.
"Oh, yeah?" M asked, "What we were doing then, if you remember?" Yeah, okay, sometimes we tease our baby. She is little and she doesn't know we're making fun of her, after all.
"Guh-ga," she answered confidently. [Guh-ga is how she says gunga - it means swing in Swedish. We have a baby swing hanging from the beams in the sunroom, and that's one of the words that she only uses Swedish for.]
You could have knocked us over with a feather. When he was telling the story to Mom, he had not once said where they were or what they were doing. Not only did she follow the conversation, understand the question, but she remembered that they were swinging, and she put it into words.
We're going to have to clean up our language, clearly...
While I am telling Evelyn stories, I might as well keep on with them and do a general baby update. She's still huge. I put her in a 3T dress yesterday. It was a little loose around the shoulders but not much. It was a yard sale find that she had really been excited about the last time she had worn it. It has orange flowers and I'm pretty sure her favorite color is orange. Generally, though, she's wearing 24mo/2T. She can still wear most of her 18mo stuff but the 24 fits better. (I had to laugh yesterday because I put a pair of white bloomers on her yesterday with that 3T dress--they were size 6/9mo. I just love the sizing differences between brands, don't you? Off the subject of anything, I have a real problem with dresses that do not have bloomers underneath. Yuck.)
She hit a major leap with the walking and she is now officially a walker as of, say, Thursday. It was funny because she took a few steps a month ago and then she just sort of stayed at that level. Then two weeks ago, she could walk eight or twelve steps at a time, but only if she was in the mood. Suddenly, it just occurred to her that walking was practical, and she stood up and started walking like a kid who had been walking for weeks. It's like she was studying so she could do it well when she got started. Now she almost never crawls. I am not looking forward to this week because the transitional weeks after she learns something newand obnoxious are always hard for me. Our house is very difficult to babyproof for a lot of reasons so we mainly just.. haven't.
She still won't eat, though. She eats lots of crackers, fruit puffy toddler snacks, cheese, etc, but she doesn't care for real food that much. She went wild and crazy a week or so ago and ate like, six pieces of rotini and sauce. *gasp* I started teaching her to eat pureed sweet potatoes with a spoon last week and was surprised at how well she's doing with it already. I mean... she'd still starve if that was her only method of gaining nourishment, but it would be take a lot longer than I expected. ;) She thinks it's wicked fun, of course. She also likes yoghurt and bananas. And french fries, though I'm not too proud of that one.
She is really into Elmo at the moment, and tonight she started saying Meh-mo. M asked her tonight what she wanted and she said, "Meh-mo. ... Mama." so apparently I am second on her list now. I am just happy I made the list at all. Poor Daddy! ;) She picked up my phone last week, held it to her ear and said, "Sissy?" twice. W enjoyed that story. :) She loves to dance, both by herself (favorite songs include the theme song to Reba and MASH) and especially being held and danced by us. She picks up on stuff really fast now. Like, I will show her something one time (say, putting Little People on her toes) and she will keep trying to put them back like that for days. She loves to look at books, and she enjoys a bedtime story with Daddy every night. She loves "Totte badar" the best. When he lets her choose, she will deliberate over the other two and then throw them away and hug the bath book to her chest. She also remembers parts of the story/illustrations and will do the same thing (pretend to brush her hair and teeth) when that part comes along.
She says: mama/mommy/baba (not sure why she calls me baba but she does sometimes), dada/daddy, cracker, ball, bath, bear, bird, granny, grandpa, papaw, water, cheese, shoes, baby, gunga, milk, elmo, sissy (my niece), boat, cat, car, bug, bunny, duck, älg (moose), no, yes (pronounced nyah), tickle, cookie, bye bye, hi, dance, more. She signs more, water, milk, bear, train, doll, love, car, baby, daddy, mommy, yes, granny, grandpa, cheese, book, ball. I am forgetting some on both saying and signing because I just now remembered to add "ball" and she says and signs that a thousand times per day. She says it more than anything else (except maybe cracker). Anything round is a ball. Lettuce, a grape, a circle drawn on paper, and even the occasional actual ball. :) She also says bo-bah, but we don't know what it means yet. She is really irritated with us for not catching on to what she wants, you can tell.
She also has been enjoying getting up way too early lately, so I think it's time that I go to bed. This morning, it was 5:40. M took her to the living room at my parents and played with her a while before he put her in the rocking chair (alone) and rocked her while she watched Elmo, and she fell asleep. It was the first time she has ever fallen asleep by herself, ever. (Not counting car rides or times when her eyes have been drifting closed and she wakes herself up right away.) I like to believe that's a good sign of her eventually sleeping on her own because otherwise, I will be going with her to college.

If she's still this cute, though, maybe I wouldn't mind too much.
