Recently, I wrote about sleeping issues. I am very happy to report that things have reversed themselves, and our new bedtime routine consists of M laying down with Evelyn for about five minutes, singing a song or two, and then telling her that we'll come check on her in a few minutes. She is usually asleep by then but occasionally she will want the same treatment from me, in which case, I spend five minutes doing the same thing, and then we tuck her in and she falls asleep on her own. It is BRILLIANT and we are still in complete shock that it's going so well because I thought she would never EVER learn to sleep on her own. But it makes sense--it's really harder to fall asleep when someone is laying there with you than when you're alone. So, there's the followup on that--about two weeks in and it's still going great. She's pretty happy about falling asleep like a big girl.
And speaking of big girls... my big girl got her ears pierced on Friday. I am firmly in the no-piercings camp for babies, but she's old enough to have an opinion in the matter herself. Any time it was mentioned, though, she would agree that she wanted earrings "when I get bigger". :) You know, when it's not so NOW. We were at the mall with my mom on Friday, and my mom mentioned earrings, mainly just to hear her reaction because she's really funny about it. Same again with the "when I get bigger, if my mommy says it's okay." I reassured her that there was plenty of time, and she could get them done whenever she wanted, and suddenly, she wanted them NOW. I guess her big hang up was actually that she thought she wasn't allowed? Haha. Hear me rationalize this. I was not so thrilled about actually doing it--it was easy to say that it would be fine, IN THEORY, but when it comes to actually putting permanent holes in my child's body, I was sort of freaked out about it. But, they're cute and she LOVES them and you know what? My teenaged niece pierced her own lip a couple of weeks ago. It's not like I will have complete control over this much longer anyway. ;) (Niece's mom made her remove it, thank goodness.) I'd show a picture but we don't yet have any great pictures of the earring. It's hard to get a good shot of someone's earring, ti seems. Also, i don't want to post pictures until Evie's had a chance to show them off to her real-life people herself.
I paid with an absurd number of coupons at Walmart today and they gave me $43 at the end of the transaction. It was awesome. Walmart has expanded their coupon policy to specifically allow for overage, but I haven't tested the cash back section yet. I won't do that very often but I happened to be at an out-of-town location that I have found before to be extremely coupon-friendly. I <3 overage.
We had this big plan to take two separate cars to Lexington today, where I was going to get my weekly coupon shopping done and M and Evie were going to do their Daddy-Evie bonding adventure. They have a few places that they go together upon occasion just for something slightly special to do. We were going to have Chinese at our fave place here in town before we left, so we headed over there after church. Unfortunately, the car that I was driving--M's, or the car formerly known as mine, before I had a child and a need for four doors--developed a slight little problem in that it stopped having one small feature that I feel is necessary for a vehicle ot have, though maybe I'm just too picky. What do you think? Do you think your vehicle needs BRAKES? Because I must say--I do. We managed to get it into the parking lot of a place that works on brakes, so we'll have a nice little car repair bill coming up. Yay! There were absolutely no brakes left in it by the time we stopped it. That's always a fear of mine, that the brakes will go out. It picked an unusually safe and convenient time and place to die, though. How many times does your car break down while you are following your spouse around in traffic, on a weekend, by a car repair shop? Not often!
We amended our plans to include all of us going to Lexington, and dropping off and picking up persons at various locations so we could continue with the errands we wanted to get done. Just so you know. I'm sure you were on tenterhooks, waiting to hear how we coped with the rest of our day.
Oh, and yesterday we celebrated midsummer. Evie and M made a midsummer pole and everything, although there is no booze at the event we went to last night (crazy, isn't it? Wanna-be Swedes in Kentucky, trying to celebrate Midsummer with no alcoholic beverages?) I stayed indoors and made that most classic of Swedish dishes, macaroni and cheese. Well, no, maybe not a classic Swedish dish but I make a pretty mean crockpot mac and cheese, and usually, our potlucks are all fish products and desserts, so I opted for universal appeal instead. :)
