I'm thinking that I'm going to have to do some fundamental research here. I think I am confused as to what "football-shaped" means. Twice in the last week, I have heard that term--and really, what are the odds? It's not like that's something people say every day--used in a way in which I could not envision. I thought a football was sort of oblong, with pointy ends. However, the specialist that my pregnant cousin was sent to* said that the baby's head should be shaped like a football, not like a lemon. I had this startling glimpse of a child born with a brown leather head. This is a concerning vision, but I passed it off thinking that the baby's head was sort of funny shaped at this point in pregnancy. Then today, I read on the internets someone refer to a Cabbage Patch doll as having a football-shaped head, and I know that they're not shaped like the kind of football that I am imagining! So, clearly, I have been misinformed about yet another sporting product.

I had a fabulous idea for a livejournal layout, mainly for friends pages. You know how some blogs are set up so that if you click the "Read more" link, it expands automatically? Wouldn't it be neat if your friends page had a suck-it button? (*laughs at own joke, isn't that sad, but don't you think suck-it button is more interesting than "expand" or "minimize"?*) That way, if someone posts something that breaks your page, or is full of pictures of really creepy things that make you go ewww ewww ewww (*winks at [livejournal.com profile] parilous*.. it was totally inspired by that post yesterday, although I promise it didn't make me think "suck it", that just popped unbidden out of my head) or whatever, you can just click the button and it will be hidden. Carrie! You could use it if someone posted a picture of an aquatic animal! Of course, there are a few obvious problems with this idea, and that is that a) I am too lazy to even pretend that I would ever work on something like this even if it were possible b) who knows, maybe someone has already done it and in that case, please direct me to that style and c) and from a more serious programming standpoint, I'm not sure how you would be able to remember which ones you had minimized--might be possible but I haven't messed with anything of that nature so I wouldn't know. I'm just saying, I think it would be totally cool.

I have been majorly entertained today with Baby's Named a Bad Bad Thing, which I have also been entertained by on multiple occasions in the past. It bears re-reading quite well because each time, I think that people ARE NOT as stupid as they seem, and each time I am reminded that I am oh so wrong. It's sad, really. But good entertainment... although I will confess that I like a couple of those names. ;)

*At a regular ultrasound, the doctor told her that the baby's head did not seem to be formed correctly, which they later learned could be a sign of spina bifida. So they had an appointment at a specialist sixty miles away scheduled for the next day. They were appropriately freaked out and worried, of course, and then the doctor says.. "uhh.. WHY did they send you here?" Head is perfectly normal, most likely cause of misdiagnosis is not doing the ultrasound correctly. So that's good news, definitely. Although perhaps not all that promising since she's going to be having her baby at the first hospital..

Cabbage Patch Kids have football shaped heads? *confuddled* So do the pointy ends go up and down or across. Can you imagine ears at the pointy ends of a football. I've never heard that a baby's head is supposed to be football shaped. I know they can get elongated and weird looking when they go through the birth canal.

I would love a suck-it button. I've had to remove a couple of different people from my friends list (not people I really knew, just people I was entertained by) because they kept posting pictures of fish. *shudder*

In some countries a football is a soccer ball so maybe that's what they mean?? :)

That's what M suggested, but this person is from California, so apparently not. I just don't get it... :)

Thanks for posting that baby name link. It certainly brightened my day at work. I'm still smiling at that woman who was very particular about her kids having initials that would make good nicknames, and illustrated her point with how proud she was that her friends called her BJ.
