People seem to wonder sometimes why it is that I'm not perfectly content in Frankfort. It's more than just being far from my family, more than just missing all the birthday parties in the last year. (That one.. doesn't really break my heart except conceptually.)
There is something fucking wrong with this town.
Excuse me if I overstate the matter, but I had a moment of rage this afternoon whilst doing a bit of grocery shopping. You see, for this first night that we can actually eat dinner together, I had planned to make cheesy broccoli risotto. I used the last of our risotto on Thursday and made up this recipe (albeit made up in a completely unoriginal sort of way because hello, I'm not the first person in the world to combine rice with broccoli and cheese.) It turned out really, really well, so I wanted to try a repeat, but when we went to WalMart on Saturday, they didn't have any. No matter, I'd just go to Kroger to pick some up.. there are a few things that WalMart doesn't really carry in the grocery line.
A blind person could see where I'm going with this.
No, you can also not purchase risotto at the second major food store I visited in pursuit of tonight's dinner. What the hell? It's not exactly the height of uncommon cuisine. It's rice, people. I don't get it. I had to leave the state to buy new potatoes this summer. Why can you not buy food here? Morehead is a third the size of Frankfort and it's farther away from large cities and it's smack in the middle of eastern Kentucky and it's not the capital city. Morehead has three different grocery stores. Frankfort just has two Krogers and a WalMart, as far as I know. I bought plenty of risotto in Morehead! I could also buy produce there! Here, it looks like crap and the selection isn't as good. I perhaps notice produce more than the average person because of my stint at the produce market, and I know I've ranted about it before, but it's just so wrong.
M called me after I got back from the store as he was on his way home. "We're not having risotto because apparently we no longer live in the civilized world," I said angrily, before I realized that I am sitting in a cubicle surrounded with people who may not be aware of the correlation between civilization and any form of grocery shopping. And that is why the people I work with? They think I'm crazy.
But you know, risotto is important. At least, it is when it's cold and grey and snowy outside and all you can think about all day is curling up with a nice creamy bowl with broccoli cheese goodness mixed in. Not that I would know because fancy food like rice is outlawed here.
