Three years ago, we put new carpet down in the place we lived before. The old carpet was thirty years old and a hideous yellow-orange-brown. We had been talking about doing it for a long time but had never done it. We had a really weird situation with my parents and the house (okay, trailer). About the weirdness, friends only. Part of the deal was that they would put new carpet in, and it just had never gotten done due to neither party getting into the project. So we got all into it in October of 2003, and we ordered new carpet. It was a horrible, horrible job. It was a small place and we had too much furniture, so everything had to be moved out or to the kitchen or bathroom. There was dust and dirt and sagging floors that needed repaired. Blood, sweat and tears. (Those last were mine, of course.)

Anyway, after all that work, we only lived there for another six or seven months. Another part of the deal was that we would (probably) sell it back to my parents when we moved, and they would continue renting it out to people. That wasn't really a requirement but just sort of understood. They've had a couple in there for the last few months who failed to understand that if one wishes to rent a dwelling, one must consequently pay rent, so my dad finally told them that they had to move out this week.

And so they went into the place last weekend. The carpet? My beautiful, lovely fresh and clean and lovely carpet? Utterly ruined. Large stains everywhere. Looks like dog pee in places (from the pet they're expressly forbidden to have.) Other places are darker. They have to replace it before they can rent it again. And did I mention that it's ruined? Beyond repair? Because.. it really breaks my heart. I don't live there anymore but it still sucks balls that what we put so much work into.. is worthless. How can people live like this? And Dad told them (before they saw it) that if there was damage they would have to pay for it, and she sounded shocked and said, "oh, there's no damage!" And there is basically a 0% chance of them actually getting money from them for it since they were unable to grasp that whole part about giving them money in the first place. The deposit won't even come close to replacing carpet throughout.

It was so pretty.
