I have just found the tool that you have been waiting for, unless perhaps I have been living under a rock and am the only one who hasn't heard of it already. I kind of would expect that other people would have mentioned it occasionally if that was the case, though, because I am so freaking excited that I am bouncing in my chair.

It's a Windows program that downloads all of your journal entries (and comments!) so that you can view them offline in a sensible LJ-like format but without all the stupid of reading old LJ entries. And you can search, both the entries and the comments! And it produces graphs. And it seems to sync with your new entries when you tell it to, which I haven't actually confirmed due to the fact that I haven't posted anything else. (Edited to add: Yep! That works! And also, it writes everything to an HTML file or files.. I am not so sure that I've ever seen a 30 MB html file but I have one now of all my journal entries, with comments.)
I have been thinking for so long about how something like this should exist, and I had a rough plan for completing it myself but honestly, am hideously out of the loop for a project like that. And, honestly, this is much, much better than even what I had planned, even if I had gotten around to figuring out how to implement it. And failing a program for it, I was going to try to undertake some sort of properly-formatted document for real backup purposes, which would have taken for freaking ever and thus, never gotten done.
Yay for neat new toys! Yay for getting to cross something big off my to-do list without having to do it!

In other news, my parents came down today, which wasn't optimal. Not because I didn't want them to come, but we couldn't get into the house as we have no key, and that's what prompted their visit. We did call the realtor, but he was in Ohio for the day and therefore unable to come by to open it up for us. We thought we got lucky because we drove out there and there were three cars in the driveway, but no one answered the door. We figured it was the people from the church, cleaning the place out. They had obviously been busy, though.. there was a huge pile of brush in the backyard that I was dreading dealing with, and it was gone, and they had cleaned up the backyard in general. Still needs a bit of work but it's much better now. We could also see a lot of the miscellaneous junk was gone when we peeped in the windows. Alas, there wasn't anyone there, and when we left for a drive and returned, the cars were already gone. So, it didn't happen. I have been trying to get them to come down for the house inspection but it seems they have to take my grandfather to the doctor in Lexington, and my mom (who was coming without dad) has to go help with my grandmother. Oh, well. At least they saw pictures, I guess.
You want to hear something funny? You remember last night when I was worrying about surveys? And you were all agreeing that someone else should have some idea of the property lines? Yeah. Well, while we were stalking my house the first time, we pulled over to the church across the street to see if someone was actually over there. We entered into a discussion of the house that's behind our house.. it's not right behind it, but set well back from the road. It's a very, very nice house, and it's for sale by owner. I said that I'd like to have a copy of the listing from the info-tube (I love those, and as I had never really noticed them before house hunting, the info tubes are tubes/boxes/ next to the for-sale sign that have papers about the house inside.) M, being the caring and considerate husband that he is--seriously, I'm not joking, he is much too nice to me--ran over to get one for me. And guess what? These lovely people selling their home? They so kindly provided us with a copy of the survey thingie of their lot, and as our lot is basically a corner of theirs.. our yard is carefully delimited, including with widths and heights. Not bad for neighborly niceness, eh? And for all the people who've asked (not that any of them are here, I don't think, but several people have asked me this) our house has around half an acre of land. As for the house for sale behind us? It costs twice as much as our house.. it really is nice.
And M? He has to work tomorrow, and his lovely, lovely boss called him today to make him work twelve hours instead of eight, so he won't be home until nine tomorrow. I really hate that. I don't mind being home alone (introverts have no trouble with solitude!) but around seven, I have reached the end of my patience, usually, and start getting restless when he's not here. Which, honestly, I know that I am lucky to have that as a problem when so many people have it worse, and well, *I* had it worse before he moved. So easy to take things for granted, isn't it? Although this topic is getting a little too deep for almost-midnight. Must go drag the boy away from Age of Empires 3 so he can get to bed. Do you ever get the feeling that we are weirdly co-dependent about our sleeping in this household? :)
