I have a billion things to do this morning while the baby is napping but I wanted to write about this while I still had it on my mind. I have always talked about the beauty of a small town. It's something that people from a city don't really understand what they're missing, I think, until they see it. That was definitely the way it was with M. He had no idea how lovely small towns can be until he lived in one.

I called a local florist this morning in my hometown to order flowers for the funeral. I discussed business with the lady who answered the phone. I happen to know that this lady is the owner because after I hung up, I called my mom to tell her this story and find out who it was. My family usually uses this florist, so I figured that she'd know.

After we had settled most of the specifics about the flowers, the lady hesitated for a minute and then said, "I just want you to know that your grandfather did a wonderful job taking care of your grandmother. I walked with him down at the college in the mornings sometimes, and I would always ask him how he was doing, and how his wife was doing. He would say that she was fair, or good, or bad, and tell me who was staying with her, and then he'd say he had to go back and get her something to eat or whatever else he was going to do for her next. He took such good care of her for a lot of years. That's the kind of devotion and love that you don't often see in someone, and I really admire him for that. He's a good man. It really brings tears to my eyes."

And then she cried. Right there on the phone with me, she cried about my grandmother and how much my grandfather loved her. It was one of the sweetest things I'd ever heard.
