I cannot believe how much I got done yesterday. Evelyn's pediatrician appointment was at 8:45. My mom came down on Monday night to go with us, so while I had a free babysitter to accompany me, we headed out to do some errands. We hit the doctor, the plant board to return the equipment and cancel our landline telephone service, the car dealership across town, where I got a new key made (and it only took an hour!), had a nice lunch, went to JoAnn's, K-Mart and the bank, and made it home by 3:30. That is a HUGE amount ofstuff if one is carting around a little one!

First, the pediatrician for the six month visit. Evelyn is still gigantic. Actually, she is even more gigantic, at 28 inches and 20 pounds, 9 ounces--both 97th percentile. It means so little that she's so big, but it's amusing to us. She's already closing in on being as tall as her mother, I'm sure M would point out. She wanted to give the vaccines since she just has a mild illness, but I declined. I asked her if it would be possible to just do them at nine months. She pointed out that she would be "behind" on them if I were to do that. I didn't much care about her being behind as long as they still work, so we're just going to wait. They also wanted to give her a flu shot, or rather, two flu shots. One now, one in a month. Am I just being contrary by not wanting to give her a flu shot? Should I? I didn't let them--I sure as hell wasn't going to give her a flu shot while she's already sick. Maybe I'm just paranoid but that seems like a bad idea, regardless of how many times they say that you can't get the flu from having the shot. She also seems to think that if Evelyn wakes up at night, I shouldn't feed her, as she previously would go all night without needing to eat, because it would only teach her that she CAN wake up to eat at night. I don't have a strong opinion on this either way but it made me grin (to myself) because I thought of poor [livejournal.com profile] helloheather and her ongoing sleep troubles with Nathan and how she said at some point that she would take care of ALL his needs, no matter what time it was, or something to that effect--I thought it was nice so I remembered it. It also made me think of how people kept telling me when she was a newborn that I should wake her up to eat. :) I doubt I will do this, though. Nice idea but if she's hungry, I'm feeding her. I'm glad I didn't get her shots, btw, as she is sicker today than yesterday, when she seemed almost well., I would have been second-guessing myself today.

(She is sleeping upright on my chest because she couldn't breathe on her back in her crib very well. Slow going with one hand--excuse any typos.)

Next, the car. Can you believe that in the year 2007, it takes an hour to make a key? And requires them to pull the car in the service area? AND COSTS $96?! So, we had to get the sleeping baby out of the car and drag her into the waiting area. My mom went ahead of me while I was dealing with the people, and when I walked into the lobby, Mom was chatting it up with some man. I have teased her before that she can find someone to talk to anywhere, as she become bosom buddies with Evelyn's pediatrician while I was being cut open for my cesarean, but this was ridiculous--why did she go in and sit down right next to some strange man?! When I looked closer, though, I realized that it wasn't a stranger, it was our undertaker. ;) Pretty unexpected when you consider that both he and my mom were ninety miles from home. I can tell you that if anyone else of my acquaintance told me that they were there because they had had car troubles while "bringing a body down here" I would probably have freaked out a little. (autopsy.) I believe he was pretty excited to run into someone he could talk to--he was going to be there for a while. To top it all off,the stupid key doesn't completely work! It won't open the trunk at all, and is sticky in the doors and ignition! Wemight go back over there today. My mom spent last night too, so she is still available for help with the baby wrangling.

As for the plant board errand--if you ever call me, remember to call my cell phone number. The link to the contact info post is here, if you need it.

JoAnn's was purely for fun, but the trip to K-Mart was to buy Evie a new car seat. I had a 20% off coupon in the mail, hence buying it there. I bought a car seat that was $100, my mom bought a pair of pants for $10, and I bought a shirt for $2.50. With coupon, it rang up to $74. HMMM. The receipt stated that we had saved $3.25. I'm no math wiz but the car seat alone should have been $80 after the 20%. The receipt showed a $20 "apparel discount" added in, as we bought apparel. I was going to question them about it but then I,,, didn't. Seriously, I will usually tell people if I think they have undercharged me, even if it is embarrassing to M, but as it happens, they get the price wrong every! time! we go to K-Mart, so I figured (when I noticed it later) that it was just my turn for good K-Mart pricing error karma. So we got a very good deal on her new seat!

I hear my mom up so I should go check on her and get the day started. I hope Miss E feels better once she wakes up! Sick babies are no fun.

Newsy, nice!

What kind of car seat did you get? I love hearing about all these big babies. The pediatrician we had when Ingrid was a baby was always saying, "Where are your chunky thighs? You're supposed to have big chunky legs - at least until you're 18 months old, then you can 'worry' about losing those thunder thighs." She said getting shots was less painful for babies with some fat on them. She was of course kidding about the thunder thighs.

I don't think you need to worry about the flu shot since Evelyn's exposure to sick people is going to be very limited. I have been getting them for my kids because they are full-time daycare/school kids and they have a history of serious respiratory problems. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother.

It's an Evenflo Titan Elite, convertible (of course). She is skating on the edge of being able to fit in her current one. It's also a PITA as far as getting her in there these days so I really hope this one is better. I guess we should put it in the car before I wash the covers to make sure.

The doc kind of said that about the flu shot, though she was recommending it overall. She said that if we got it, she likely wouldn't need it. I've never had one myself so.. I don't know.

G and I have both had flu shots for the last couple of years. Mainly because they offer them free at work and I figure it isn't really fair to the kids to make them get one and not be willing to do it myself. So yesterday was our day. If they weren't free at work, I don't know, I guess I would go to the clinic on one of those days and pay whatever it is. The pediatrician gives them to the kids for free but they'll give them to anyone (including adults) if they pay for it so maybe ask them about it.

Flu shots are important because babies are one of the vulnerable groups to serious complications from the flu... and since we have the ability to minimize/remove that risk, why not do it at the cost of a little temporary discomfort? Not that I'm questioning you avoiding it that day... if Rhys was sick already, I wouldn't have either.

Rhys is behind on his vaccinations too, because I chose not to start vaccinations until he was 4 months old. We're going in for his 6-month shots next week (he's 9 months now). We just pop down for the vaccination clinic, so I don't have to bother my doctor for it. :-) As long as I'm actually vaccinating the boy, my doctor's all for letting me do it when and how I want.

Oh... and Evelyn is the same length as, and heavier than, Rhys. :-D I'm betting his head's bigger though.

I noticed that when you posted his stats! She's a little chunk. I think her head is 17 inches, staying at 50th percentile. Giving new parents statistics is dangerous. ;)
