First, I have been remiss in not saying that we fed Evelyn her very first solid food this week! Tuesday night, I mashed up a banana and gave it to her. I think in this case, a picture is worth a thousand words.

solid yuck

It was... not a success.

Second, I was going to post about the naked blanket that I made last week. I have been thinking about making one for a long time. The idea is that there's a layer of waterproof fabric on the bottom to protect your floors from accidents while the baby rolls around naked. It's good for their little bottoms to air out, you know, and Evelyn likes it. I've been throwing a vinyl tablecloth down with a sheet on top of it, but it's a pain because she will grab the sheet and wad it up. Anyway. These blankets are really expensive ($50 or so) and there's no way I'd pay that, even though honestly, it's worth it because of the cost of materials. There are several technical issues regarding the construction of this that I wasn't thinking of when I decided to do it, so I kept putting it off. Carrie and I had a long discussion about the best way to do it when she was here, so I wanted to post a picture so she could see I actually did it. Poor Mike looked really bored during that particular conversation. I didn't do it the way we talked about, which was to create a quilted top layer and sew it to the back as one piece so that there was no quilting all the way through. You don't really want to put a lot of holes in your waterproof layer, after all. I went the easy route, deciding (for once) to not overthink something. What I ended up doing was basically just using three yards of material--one PUL (on bottom), one sherpa (top) , one flannel (hidden in the middle, for absorption), turned and topstitched. That was an interesting project, to say the least, but I'm mostly pleased with how it turned out. I haven't washed it yet, and the PUL wasn't prewashed, so I did lay it down for her to play on for a few minutes on the clean side, but all she wants to do is lick the bottom unwashed section, so I had to throw it in the laundry before I was really planning to and it's not done yet. She likes the pattern of that one too, apparently. It's fluffy and soft, but really not much to look at like this. There were better pictures but they clearly showed the wonky topstitching in a few places. That stuff is slippery!

So, that was a fun afternoon project that helped me clear out a little of my fabric stash.

Also, Evelyn got her first kiss from a BOY last week. Mustn't forget to show that! M, of course, has promised to look into having a chastity belt made straight away.

When M shows off the pictures in the gallery at work, everyone always exclaims over what a happy baby she is. She's always smiling and looking happy! She is generally a very happy baby, but I thought, in the interest of full disclosure, I should post one of the ones we took during our last serious photo shoot. We're calling it "Why Sometimes Photo Sessions Don't Happen." It's easy to show only smiling photos when one takes fifty and then posts only the best ones.

bad photo shoot

It's not as easy as it looks, y'all.

And finally--this is the picture I'm planning on having printed as a package to give out, as I have procrastinated for ages about giving people pictures. Aww, sweet baby girl.

*lol* She really didn't like that banana, did she! So glad you got your blanket made. I was overcomplicating the issue, I think. I am used to working with batting and that stuff has to be stiched down really well or it will fall apart eventually.

Oh, and Erik didn't get a haircut. That's a pic a friend sent me yesterday from the Halloween party so it was just slicked back into the greaser look. He is in pretty dire need of a clean-up trim, but I dread taking him because he will just scream.
