THURSDAY

When I worked [outside the home*] I had a certain rhythm to my weeks. Mainly--Wednesdays sucked. The third working day of the week just killed me. Now that I'm not at that job, I have a new rhythm, and that is that Thursdays, I do not want to cook. I don't know why. It's M's early day so it should be one of the days best suited for cooking. It's nearly the weekend, so I should feel enthused. And yet, no. I have noticed that it is almost always a Thursday when I ask M to pick something up on his way home, or that we scrap the dinner plans and heat up a frozen pizza. It doesn't matter if my day has felt slothful or if I have been busy busy busy--I don't like cooking on Thursdays. It is so weird. We'll see whether or not that holds for today. I don't particularly feel like cooking at the moment, but that is also because I have worked hard for two hours while Evelyn has been asleep. I am taking a break right now only because the kitchen floor is wet--I EVEN MOPPED--and the next thing is doing dishes. Yeah, kind of weird to mop before the kitchen was clean, but I was on a roll.

I went to lunch with some lovely people I used to work with today. It was very nice. I might not miss working, but I sure do miss them. Evelyn was very well-behaved--she was a little unsure at first about all the attention she was getting, but she didn't cry. I can't believe it has been six months since I saw most of them. Some of them on occasion read this journal (hi guys!) and so they can keep up with what we're doing but I have no idea what's going on with them.

Yesterday, I spent much of the day trying to figure out how to burn a DVD so that it would play in our DVD player in the living room. What I was doing should have worked, but there was no video, only sound. I tried it several different ways and I never could get it to work--it would play in the laptop but not the player. While I was googling it, I found out that this particular model was known to not play homemade disks well, so M and I had this discussion about replacing it soon. It was a cheap player. Then I encountered directions for making it region-free, so I thought.. hey, wonder if that would work? They always tell you that this could render your player inoperable but you know, you never really think it will happen to you. Ahem. So, I wound up the day by breaking the damned thing completely. Bad signal no matter what we do. Yay! It made it a little easier to bear since we had already decided to buy a new one.

*On one hand, I do not have outside employment so it is most practical to say things like "when I worked..." And yet, when I say that, I feel like I am contributing to the societal denigration of stay-at-home-motherhood so I feel like I should make a point of stating that what I do is, in fact, work. I am raising a responsible citizen of the world here! I am keeping the house bearably clean, the laundry done, the food fixed! Some days I work a whole hell of a lot harder than I did at my state job, where we once spent two days designing a frilly hat for my boss to wear. Bad example. I think that the days where it is easier just sort of rounds things out.

Did you already get a new player? We got a region free one on ebay (brand new) for about $80 including shipping.

Do you know what kind yours is? We looked at Walmart tonight but had already decided to buy a region free one and of course WM didn't have em.

I just looked at it and hope this will be helpful. It is a Pioneer. Over on the other side it says DV-393.

Ok, I just looked on eBay and found the product so I was right! http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=pioneer+dv-393&category0=

Thanks. I just ordered one, on your recommendation, so if it sucks I will blame you. ;) I ordered it from Beach Camera for $59. Here's hoping it works like it's supposed to!

I think that being a SAHM is just about one of the hardest jobs there is and people who don't recognize that are probably thinking of those with school age kids and not little babies and toddlers. That's a different ball game.
