I am not paying $9.07 to ship a $14 bottle of sunscreen. I'm just not going to. I am having a desperately hard time forking over the $14 in the first place, but we have decided to stop using potentially cancer-causing chemicals on/for Evelyn as much as is feasible and practical. I bought some California Baby soap for her, but we're still using our old lotions... just using them much less (only when she really needs lotion and not as a matter of her bedtime routine.) There is so freaking much to worry about, you know that? Like, the guilt induced by slathering my kid up with sweet-smelling Johnson's lotion, or realizing that her bottles and pacifiers (neither of which she used much, or for very long) had BPA in them. Quick, is anyone surprised that I would take to the worrywart aspect of parenting like a duck to water?

Silence. Crickets chirping. Ahh, but you do know me.

Speaking of ducks, I tried to get E to say "ducky" today. She said, "Kckk." She's big on K sounds these days. M is teaching her to say ormbunke of all the bloody things in the world to work on. (It means fern in Swedish--he was using one of our hanging ferns to tickle her nose with.) In Evelyn language, ormbunke = kookoo. Last week, she said cookie. She has NO IDEA what a cookie is. I'm not saying this because I want you to know that I'm a great parent who would never feed her a cookie. We did give her some cookie once or twice, but I adore cookies and therefore I never make them, lest I eat them all. However, we never talked about cookies. She got a singing cookie jar shape-sorter for her birthday, and it sings about cookies, so she calls it "cookie". (pronounced k-ckie). Really cute. She isn't doing too badly with the language acquisition so far, I don't think. I have been expecting her to be delayed because of the bilingual thing. Maybe it's because we're not giving her enough Swedish exposure. Maybe I should go worry about that for a while too. Ha! Tricked you; I've been worrying about that for YEARS already!

In my quest to be just like [livejournal.com profile] carrieb, I bought a strawberry pot the other night. And, that is pretty much the end of that story, it seems. And this post, since I can't think of anything else to say. I was going to add pictures to fill it out but the server is dead. Ahh, well.

Last week, she said cookie. She has NO IDEA what a cookie is.

You should feed her something healthy and call it a 'cookie'. She'll feel resentful that you lied to her, but you'll have a few good years of giving her something that she hears other kids raving about. :)

What is so special about the sunscreen that makes it cost $14? What ought the sunscreen not contain to be an option? Maybe there is something you can find locally?

Did you vote?!?!??!?!

What do you mean, vote? Just local elections going on, nothing interesting. I'm a Republican!

HAHAHAHA!

Just kidding. ;) I haven't voted yet but I'm going to. Right now I'm waiting on my mom to get here so I don't want to leave the house yet! I'm thinking Hillary. I figure they're about the same but she's a chick and I like that about her. ;) It's like the first time anyone has ever cared about Kentucky's elections... though I did see on the news last week they were still completely ignoring the fact that we hadn't voted yet.

This is the article that reviewed the "safe" sunscreens: Safemama sunscreen showdown. More about phtlalates at wikipedia, and there's a glossary at the safemama thing just full of things for me to worry about. I swear I'm not going insane over it, though. I'm just trying to minimize what I can, and replace what we have with 'better' stuff. For now. :)

I have Earth's Best Sunblock and man does that stuff work (also doesn't contain that junk). Living in California, there are enough of us crunchy moms that most stores sell stuff like this. If you want, I can pick up the brand of your choice and just mail it to you.

The one I was looking at was from the TruKids line because the reviews were saying it had a pleasant scent and absorbed nicely, but it's not THAT important which I use. I might just go with another brand. Honestly, I could get it at Amazon (sold by the company) for around $5 shipping, but I was prepared to vent by the time I posted. *laugh* I hate it when people are trying to make money on shipping. Pet peeve. Hmm.. Earth's Best. That seems to be carried by Babies R Us, and we will drive by (ish) one of those this weekend. I might just stop in and see if I can buy it locally, if I can't find a good place online (ie, free shipping.)

I knew you'd understand. ;) Thanks for the offer, I would totally take you up on it if I didn't think it would end up more trouble than it was worth. :)

It's hard not to worry with so many worrisome things out there.

So is M speaking Swedish to Evelyn now?

My poor strawberries are never going to get red. They need 8 hours of sunshine a day and they are not getting any with all the rain we have here. But at least my hummers finally showed up on my balcony today! Be just like me and have some hummers!

He is speaking Swedish to her but not all the time when I'm there. I have been putting on an obnoxious CD for her most days lately, hoping that might help.

I will have the same problem with my strawberries, I bet. We have no sun here cause of the trees.

It would be cool to have hummers. M LOVES hummers! He freaked out about them when he first moved here because he said that he had always thought hummers were mythical, like unicorns, so he was always on about the hummers. Of course, he was being ironic and then two years later, I heard my mom saying that M didn't believe in hummers so apparently that didn't quite sink in. He even started a cross-stitch of hummers in his extraordinarily brief needlework phase! So clearly, he is all about the hummers and he would love it if there were hummers here more often. Alas, there are few hummers hanging around here now.

That was a fun paragraph to write. *giggle*

*lmao* I thought you were having way too much fun with that paragraph.

I love that she's talking. How random that M is teaching her fern. That totally sounds like something Peter would do. ;-)

I know you're trying to take my title as Worrying Momma Supreme. I've held this title for over 6 years, believe me you don't want it.

You can keep the title! Unfortunately, I don't seem able to control the worrying momma supreme tendencies. ;)

Also, M is a weirdo. *nods*
