Can you send flowers to furry red monsters? Does FTD even deliver to Sesame Street? Maybe he would prefer a freshly opened batch of crayons or fish food, anyway. Have you ever actually listened to the Elmo's World song? Elmo is kind of a sad little monster. "Elmo loves his goldfish, his crayons too." Gee, Elmo, you are one happening dude! But I don't even care because Elmo has done something that Mommy and Daddy sure couldn't do.
A Time Line of Evelyn's Progress With TEH POTTY.
November (18 months) : Became really interested in using the potty. She began going about once a day. We even took the potty with us on Thanksgiving weekend.
Early December (18 months): Came home from Thanksgiving and got sick; subsequently lost all interest in the potty.
December - late January (18-20 months): lackluster potty attention. would go occasionally, but rarely.
Late January - late Februaryish (20-21 months): Some renewed attention, but nothing approaching true interest.
Late February-April 8 (21-23 months): almost complete disinterest, accompanied by a refusal to even sit on the potty most of the time. Mommy instituted potty presents (stickers or a piece of candy, usually, which gave her a little push in the right direction, but she would mainly just talk about wanting presents and not actually go to the potty most of the time.)
April 9 (23 months): Elmo's Potty Time DVD arrives in the mail from our Blockbuster queue. I had put it on there and kind of forgot about it. We were actually planning on canceling our subscription before the next movie came but we forgot. (Signed up for it for a free $25 deal, which finally credited.) Evelyn watches Elmo's Potty Time.
April 10: pees on potty for the first time in ages
April 11-12: gone to Granny's for the weekend, but watches DVD twice on the way home Sunday night. (Hey, you try making a toddler sit still for an hour and a half in the car every three weeks and you will buy a portable DVD player too. If it works, it works.)
April 13: POO! TWO TIMES! IN THE POTTY! Also, pee at one of those occasions.
April 14: Pee--FOUR times.
April 15: One pee, one poo so far.
I know that it may not be a continuing trend and she may be four before she's out of diapers because you never know, etc etc, but geez! That is really incredible that one DVD has made such an impact on her. Mostly, she is only going when I take her there and put her on the potty--not really when she tells me she needs to go, but it's a start. Now I have to learn when to start suggesting the potty and how to get her there without a fight. She doesn't want to stop what she's doing and go try, most of the time. I had to laugh at her today because after the poo, she stood up to inspect it, pointed at it and said, "SNAKE!" *giggle* Uhh... no. :)
I had been planning on focusing strongly on the potty not long after she turns two, but I had also recently decided that potty training was probably less important than weaning, and maybe I shouldn't push both on her at once. So... I don't know. I am encouraging this as far as I can because I am not stupid, but we'll see where it goes. The DVD makes a big deal out of how everyone will use the potty all the time sooner or later, and that is just the sort of message that would appeal to her. She is (I promise I'm not just saying this because she's my kid and I think she's wonderful) a very thoughtful child. You can see her thinking things through sometimes. I mean, I know she's not capable of puzzling out quantum physics or anything but I can easily see how she is processing the information that okay, this is something that I'm going to have to do eventually, and Elmo thinks it's awesome and Mommy and Daddy keep talking about it and they think it's great when I do it now so it must be something good, and hey, what do you know, it feels better to not have that in my diaper! Huh!
So anyway. She is making serious progress all of a sudden and it is all thanks to Elmo. And on a similar note, I can't believe that she is still all about Elmo. Seriously. I keep expecting her to latch on to someone else but no, not really. She likes the other Sesame Street characters a lot (but not quite as much), especially Abby and Oscar. She likes Dora, but very moderately. She got really excited when she saw Barney on the other day but it didn't last. Kids are weird. Why is Elmo so endlessly fascinating to her, I wonder?
And that is all I have to say about potties at the moment, so I'd better get back to the other stuff I have to do during nap time. I love naptime. I kind of feel guilty that I like it so much when she's asleep but geez, it is good to sit down and not think about potties. Except... oops, I just wronte 850 words about them just now. ;)

Date: 2009-04-16 01:17 am (UTC)I have that video. Maybe I ought to bring it out. I was avoiding it, back when I was in my "oh no I never let my kid watch TV" phase. I'm over that. Ha.
Nathan regularly uses the potty to pee at the end of the day. He never uses it otherwise. And he never poops in there. So we clearly have some things to work on.

Date: 2009-04-16 05:22 pm (UTC)I'm not a fan of Elmo, the voice and his incessant talking in the third person annoys me. ;-) My kids loved him though.
