You might know that my husband has contracted a dreadful sickness since he moved here--mandolin obsession. (And to a slightly lesser degree, bluegrass music.) Tonight, he was reading about a new ebay find, and I thought I would share it with you all. A mandolin even I can appreciate. Cute, eh? (Apparently the builder doesn't really want to sell it, hence the $15k starting bid.)

I made Swedish pizza tonight.. I was going to make it Friday night but I got sick and didn't feel like it. This is the first time I've done it alone, though, and it was a little more work than I was ready for tonight. But it turned out really well, even if the crust was too crispy. I decided to not bother making my half like Swedish pizza at all, and covered it with a bunch of spicy stuff. Pretty good stuff! Magnus had salami, onions, mushrooms and egg. He really didn't want mushrooms but I forgot and added them anyway. *giggle* He'll be taking half of the second one to work for lunch.. I suspect there'll be a comment on the egg. ;)

I want to learn how to make Swedish pizza, dang it! Of course, there's no way in heck I'm putting bananas on it. :o Noooo way. Bananas go in cereal, not on pizza! *^_^* I'm kidding. Well, not really, I'm serious, but I don't want Magnus thinking I'm being a nerd if he reads this, hahaha! (Oh wait - I *am* a nerd... well shoot....)

Okay, what exactly is Swedish pizza? I've asked Peter but he's clueless (perhaps being brought up by a Finnish mother really does disqualify him from being a true Swede ;-)

Swedish pizza is what's served to Swedes by Turkish immigrants. ;) At least, that's how it was explained to me. It's closer to Italian pizza than American is, I think. The basic idea is exactly the same (except the toppings are weird) but somehow the implementation is completely different. I happen to like it, but I don't really consider it pizza. It's floppy and thin, often with things I wouldn't consider eating in the same meal (or at all), much less the same bite. ;)

Magnus (who reads over my shoulder sometimes) says that a lot of Swedes claim that the pizza served in Sweden is Italian. He insists that it definitely is not the same. ;) In any event, he adores it, and this is as close to it as we can get over here. :)

I lived in Italy for 2 years and the pizzas here in Sweden are NOT Italian pizza. Magnus is right, they are more of a Turkish pizza, though Turkish pizza doesn't have all the toppings - I think that's a Swedish adaptation. I make my own Italian style pizza here as I find the toppings VERY bizarre. But I have braved a couple of them and lived to tell the tale :)

Ah, Peter asked if perhaps it was "Italian" pizza that was being discussed but I see now it's more like Turkish pizza.

Food variations are just odd. I haven't experienced enough this particular oddity though! :)
