With the Derby being next weekend, FoodTV (which is probably the channel on the most at our house) had a Kentucky theme tonight, which was pretty cool. Lots of bourbon used.. I have a feeling that these TV chefs would be greatly disappointed if they knew how seldom bourbon is actually used for cooking in the average Kentucky household. They would probably also be disappointed to find out that burgoo is not something sold on every street corner. I've actually never had it, nor have I had a mint julep. And I don't like Derby pie. But still, it was fun to watch, and some of the scenery was *very* Kentucky. Not being biased or anything, this is one of the prettiest states I've been to. It's all about rolling, brilliantly green hills and those gorgeous horse fences. I love those. Even if they are mostly for decoration.

I'm actually a Derby baby. I was delivered by Dr. Louise herself. Dr. Louise is somewhat of a legend in the area, and rightfully so. She brought health care to a very rural area and she worked hard all her life. I was in her office with the flu not too long before she died in 1998, actually. Anyway, I was born on a Derby weekend, and shortly after my birth, my mother nearly died from complications. (I always felt vaguely guilty about that as a child.) My grandmother claimed, and I don't know exactly how serious she was, that Dr. Louise was too busy watching the Derby to pay attention to my mom. :)

I've never been to the Derby. I've never actually been to a horse race at all, to tell the truth. I keep thinking I should. We were thinking about taking Blatt (M's best friend) to Keeneland if he came over to visit in October, but it turned out that he couldn't. I wish I knew more single girls around here.. I've had grand plans of setting him up with someone since before I even met him. Everyone I know is married. Vastly annoying. It's also kind of funny because I think he knows--and has always known--that I have plans for matchmaking that involve him, but he never tells me to mind my own business, and he IS still single, so he must be waiting for me to find someone.. right? ;) *wink* Yep, I can rationalize anything.

I'm so sleepy. I have no idea why I'm still awake. I have to work tomorrow, too, so I have to get up too early. Night night!

I'm a Louisville girl, and no member of my immediate family has ever been to Derby. I even grew up in the South End!

Burgoo on every street corner... hmmm... Funny, people rarely give Kentucky credit for some of its few true Kentucky foods, like a Hot Brown and Benedictine cheese, both Louisville inventions. Green cheese and cheese-drowned meats - all right!

Cheese is always good! I've also never had a Hot Brown (although it was actually mentioned on the show.) That's more of a personal taste issue, though.. I've just never been a fan of hot sandwiches.

I used to live in Memphis, and no one we knew who was originally from there had ever been to Graceland. I guess it's the same principle. :)
