K: So do I get to pick what we do for my birthday weekend?
M: Sure!
K (long pause): Can I pick anything I want?
M (warily): I guess so..
K (cheerfully): Oh, good! We're going to spend Saturday CLEANING!

And so we did. :)

Now I'm completely exhausted, but not stressed out about how dirty the house is! We did some errands and things in town, and started the housework when we got home. The computer room, which looked previously like a tornado had gone through it, now looks all orderly and stuff, and that makes me very happy. I hope we found and fixed the place the big nasty spiders were coming in, too. *shudder* I had a major crisis involving one yesterday. I know that I've just been conditioned to be afraid of spiders, and I should probably work out my issues in therapy or something, but I couldn't do that because then they'd probably make me touch one or something and I couldn't do that.

I had the bright idea this morning, actually, to have a very good celebratory dinner. I saw Bobby Flay cook something the other day on the food channel that looked good enough for me to go find the recipe right away.. I usually don't bother making anything that they do, just listening to it. Recipe here. It was sooo good, but it took even more time and energy than I had thought. We did it almost exactly as he said (had to use regular mushrooms instead of shiitake cause we couldn't find em) and I accidentally added shallots to the potato gratin. Ooops. Anyway, it was very much worth the time and money (kind of expensive) but when we do it again, we'll leave out the fancy crouton bread (though it was surprisingly good to be so simple) and make a different gratin. It was too.. heavy, with all that cream and then the balsamic vinegar. We also used Slotts mustard instead of dijon.. we didn't have any. *giggle* Fancy shmancy, ya know.

My family is astonished that I turned out to enjoy cooking. (I'm actually somewhat astonished myself.) When Magnus and I got together, we knew that he would be the one doing all the cooking, but it completely didn't turn out that way at all. He's only cooked a few meals since we've been married. My mom is very pleased with my transformation, but she's also a little frustrated, I think. I mentioned to her how good the new potatoes and fried cabbage was the other day, and got a spontaneous lecture on how I would find that simple cooking tastes better than all that fancy stuff anyway. ;) She doesn't complain much when we invite them over for dinner, though.. hehe.

Oh, and also newsworthy.. we went to a book sale at the public library today and bought a box and a bag of books for like $17. Most of them were 35 cents each. Vastly exciting.. although if we'd waited until four, we could have filled a bag for $3. *sneef* Oh, well, most of our books probably wouldn't have still been there at four, so who cares? ;) $17 for that many books is ridiculously cheap anyway.
